This is the best. Its so pleasing to listen to. I had heard it twice before I purchased it and remember thinking what cheerful, uplifting music it is. It lifts my mood each time I play it. Someone mentioned that it was good dinner music, I would whole heartedly agree. In fact, I am online now to buy one for my sister for her birthday. She is an artist, she wants to have this on while she works.

As a singer, Im always looking for new (or old) material and in this wonderful CD, Sentimental Journey, by the incomparable Miss Beegie Adair, Ive found fabulous new presentations of matchless WW2 songs. There are 12 songs on this CD and Ive taken 6 of them for my own interpretation. These are the nostalgic songs that our parents danced and romanced to in the 40s and theyre just as beautiful today. Beegie brings them to life again, not that they ever went away, but to listen to her brilliant playing of Im Getting Sentimental Over You Sentimental Journey Its been a Long,Long Time Youll Never know and Ill Be Seeing You is a very moving experience. Long live Brilliant Beegie !!

Best-ever "cocktail piano"

For those who dont know her, Beegie Adair has made the best albums ever created, in a class of music that used to be called "cocktail piano". Unlike the great jazz pianists that require close attention while listening (Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Hampton Hawes, etc), she makes music thats quiet and relaxing, but with much more class and intelligence than Muzak, elevator music, or schlocky pop-cover instrumentals. Its the perfect background music for working at a computer, making or having drinks or dinner, or talking with friends. If youd like some of that in your collection, shes as good as youll ever find. "Ill Take Romance" is the album I would recommend most highly this would be a good second, if you try that and want more.

This is a wonderful piano rendition of Sinatra classics by Beegie Adair, along with a second CD featuring David Huntsinger. Not being familiar with David Huntsinger, we like the CD, but it is not really suitable for the background music we were looking for.

This is the 6th Beegie Adair CD I have purchased - Ive yet to be disappointed. The style is rich and warm. There is no unnecessary overcomplication that you so often see in jazz. The interpretations do the original writers proud. The music will get inside of your head - and thats a very good thing!

I came across Beegies music about 6 months ago and absolutely love it. I have several of her albums now and was excited to get this set which arrived last night. I was surprised to see that 2 of the albums dont even have Beegie on them. I assumed from the way it was listed that she and David H. played together on them, but 2 of the albums are only David and his friends. He is great, too. Possibly a bit less dynamic, and doesnt quite "move" me the same, but great none-the-less. Just dont expect 3 Beegie albums. By the way, the Beegie album is the Frank Sinatra Collection, so if you already have it dont get this set. The David H. albums are For Sentimental Reasons Vol.I and II. For the price, this set is a great bargain. And who knows, David H. just might become one of my new "faves" :)

The first cd is Beegie Adairs Sinatra disc, the other two by Huntsinger are pretty lame in comparison, but for the money its a decent deal for all three.

By now, I may own nearly all her recordings even though each time I purchase one from Amazon, I think itll be the last.

If you like the serenity the "oldies" bring, then youll love the sound youll hear, whether youre sitting at the computer or as background to a dinner party.

By the way, until nine months ago, I confess I never heard the name "Beegie Adair." Then, a TV commercial promoted a CD, and I was hooked! You probably will be, too.

When you combine the lovely music of Jerome Kern and Miss Adairs exceptional style and numerous techniques you get a winning combination. I was surprised to hear some of the versions of the songs on this CD which were less traditional and more swing. However, these pieces really showcase Miss Adairs musical talent. She has inspired me to resume my own piano lessons, and, as another reviewer stated, I will be purchasing more of her CDs in the future.

For nearly a year now ive been buying MP3 albums off of Amazon for use as a massage therapy student, and of all of the albums ive purchased this is in my top 10 list. One thing ive realized is the importance of good music for a massage therapy setting. Different music is good for different types of massage, but this one is superb for many. The sound is great, the use of the instruments is expertly done, and the flow is exquisite. I highly recommend this CD for relaxation and massage.

After reading the other reviews and finally deciding to purchase it, I was not disappointed in the least. It is a fabulous piece of art in sound, a beautiful tapestry of music. The first time I played it, I could feel channeling reiki spontaneously as the music created the right ambient for it to happen. The mind cant track the music so you wont get bored with it, it tends to bypass the thinking mind. Great for Qi Gong and other moving or gentle meditative energy movements. Delicate oriental scent with big dosis of devotional love to the sacredness of the earth in this case Koyasan mountain. Bravo!

Great Backdrop for Meditation

Koyasan is a mountain in Japan, and is the home of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism. There are hundreds of temples in the vicinity, and overall is a beautiful place to visit.

Reiki is a fairly modern invention, also originating in Japan, which explains that there is a limitless life force ("Ki") in the universe that can be controlled with the proper conditioning of the mind and body. Reiki has no obvious connection to Buddhism, so Im not going to go into it here, but it is an interesting "spiritual" practice worth a look if you are interested..

So what do these two terms have to do with us? They set the stage for Deuters latest instrumental/meditation CD, Koyasan. Deuters music has obvious Eastern influences, with Japanese instruments such as the shakuhachi flute and koto, as well as others from mainland Asia, such as the Tibetan singing bowl. There are, of course, piano and more traditional instruments included in the arrangements, but if you want to meditate and pretend that you are sitting on Mount Koyasan, you can do that.

As I did my research for this review, I found that Deuter has put out dozens of CDs similar to this one. I am not going to comment on whether this is better or worse than his other work, simply because I am not familiar with his other CDs. I would go so far to say this is an excellent "first meditation music CD" to pick up, and I plan to pick up more of his work in the future.

The eight tracks on the CD are all fairly long, running 8-10 minutes each for the most part. There is no noticeable tune or rhythm to any of the songs, yet everything feels right, and sounds good. Its relaxing without being distracting or jarring, and makes an excellent backdrop to meditation. If you live in a noisy area, playing this while meditating can block out the noise without being too distracting. After a few moments, you stop mentally hunting for a tune and just go with the sounds, gently, calmly, taking whatever comes, and letting it go again.

Will the music heal you, as Reiki practitioners suggest? I have no idea, but I have covered the positive health benefits of meditation here before, so maybe there is something to it. I will definitely recommend the CD for a soothing, relaxing backdrop for meditation, or even just a quiet soundscape to enjoy.

The search for solace involves a difficult reconciliation of conflicting emotions, pitting ones need to grieve at odds with a heavy-hearted realization that life, however diminished, must go on. Using an audio palette of grays and dark blues, Michael Hoppe offers Solace as a balm for the soul during such times, "where the dark clouds in life give way to the glow of eternal hope and peace." The clouds never fully lift during the 12 tracks of Solace, which appear to progress in a stages-of-mourning manner. The effect can be moving, even lovely (particularly the grand orchestral opener, "The Majestic Land," one of four splendid selections involving the Prague Symphony -- recorded remotely via an Internet link, of all things). The prevailing mood is melancholy but not quite maudlin two angelic arias ("Pie Jesu," which Hoppe had written for the memorial service of his wifes mother, and "Lachrymosa") are tearless, reverent expressions that aspire to the divine. The closing moment of "The Parting," a retooled but otherwise ordinary composition from 1986 that involves Vangelis, finally yields a sense of closure. Needless to say, Michael Hoppes music is beautiful, lyrical, expressive, and passionate. However, after purchasing several of his CDs, I keep hearing the same old tunes played with different orchestrations. Dont get me wrong...I love the melodies...but once you have heard a tune it gets trite after multiple playings, no matter how beautiful.
Michael needs to let go of his old themes and ask for fresh melodies to come forward.
Of course, if you havent heard his earlier works, you will enjoy this one.

Id never heard of Hoppe or his music, but downloaded this album on referral from, of all people, my mother. Id have never thought shed be the source of a referral to such a good piece of music (no offense mom, but you know how it is).

I find the slightly new-age elements of this music combined with the symphonic and orchestral arrangements to be simply outstanding. This music is peace. Its romance. Its calm. And its solace. When Im need of moments of peace and escape from some of lifes daily troubles to which I am exposed, I can play this music at work, in the car and at home and receive quality music and peace in my mind, eliminating as much as possible the noise of life.

All the tracks are worthy of recommendation in their own right however, I think the first one, This Majestic Land, rises above all and is truly powerful. When I listen to it I can see in my minds eye the greatest beauties and majesty of Gods creations on earth.

When I first heard Michael Hoppes YEARNING about 10 years ago, the tears came flooding. I didnt know anything about NEW AGE music. Since then, I began my own composing and performing career & Michael and I have become good friends. I consider him my musical idol, having visited his Portland, OR home and played on his grand piano some of my own compositions. This SOLACE album is spectacular! That sums it up. The first piece stirs such deep feelings that even after listening to it many, many times, Im still overcome. Hes amazing, IMHO. If you love great music, you want all his albums!

"I suffer not a woman to teach nor usurp authority over a man". It used to be simple but books like these wrestle Pauls words, exactly like Peter said they would, into a meaning that fits their theology.

OK, can you name one female elder from the Book of Acts?
Can you name a female apostle, overseer (bishop), elder, or pastor by name in the New Testament? There is ONE teacher of men mentioned, her name is in Revelation and it is "Jezebel".

Women are wonderful helps, hostesses (deacons) tesimony givers, encouragers, servants to Gods people. But God reserved leadership and headship to the man. "The head of every man is Christ, the head of every woman is the man..." 1Cor.11:1-4

A man who makes his wife "co-pastor" should take down the signs in the church designating mens bathroom and womens bathroom.

God did not see fit to put women in leadership over men. The apostate church does.

Cunningham, et al, have done a masterful job of addressing a topic which too often is tackled based on traditionalism, scriptural "sound bites," and emotionalism. Stripping away our preconceptions, they have examined this issue in the light of the full counsel of Gods Word (the Bible), careful study of the original languages (Hebrew and Greek), cultural context, and the historical and comtemporary record of women in ministry. This book is now a "must read" recommendation from me to peers in ministry. As truth will always do, I found this book to be liberating!

If you are like me, you may not believe in women pastors because of how you were raised and how you understand certain passages in the Bible.
This book taught me a lot that I had not known about ancient Greek, Roman, and Hebrew culture, and had a great many insightful things to say which had never crossed my mind before. Very good food for thought.
As with ANY book you read, you should keep your mind open and keep your mind thinking for itself. And be led by the Spirit.
I would recommend this for men as well as for women.

This book is just excellent. It covers all of the important questions on the topic, the writing is very smooth, and I love the illustrations. I cant recommend it enough.

I would encourage all who read this book to be very careful in reading it. The first half of the book has to do with the injustices done women, which are true and very unfortunate, but have nothing to do with what the Bible has to say about the subject directly. All that God has made, humans have used for something for which is was not intended.

The second half of the book attempts to describe what the Bible really has to say about the subject. While I am no greek scholar, some of the greek I looked up did not line up with what the authors were stating. An incredibly big problem with the book has to do with assumptions. The author will rightly state that some of the traditional interpretations may not be correct, but then he gives the alternative interpretation that he has obviously accepted without evidence, then proceeds to justify his beliefs as if the assumption is true. He also fails to review other scriptures that have to relate to the relationship between women and men and fathers and their daughters and sons that do not line up with the way he believes.

If you have a good handle on scripture, this book would be interesting to see where some people are coming from. If you do not understand scripture well, BEWARE! I feel this author distorts scripture for his own personal views (2 Peter 3:16). If you are brave enough to tackle the book, then you had better be committed enough to review scripturally all that he is teaching (OPEN your Bible and look into the greek and the surrounding verses--context) as well as the other areas of the Bible where gender differences are discussed.

If you are really interested in the question "Why Not Women?" then I would encourage you to read the book "Why Men Hate Going to Church" to get a more balanced view.

Read so many barna books, but this one is so different. it is revolutionary! Here is a respected Christian writer from a traditional church background going truth and dare on the traditional church. Barna puts todays church into realistic perspective-- i.e. as seen thru the eyes of the greater population including those inside the church and Believers.

This book gives extarordinary one-of-a-kind insight and invocative data for 3 persons:

The Face of the Church is Changing

This is a groundbreaking book. George Barna, who is esteemed by the evangelical Christian world, lays it all on the line and the numbers reveal the sad truth that the present form of the traditional church is not getting the job done. Its failing to change lives and its failing to influence the culture that surrounds it.

There is a revolution happening and it has to with the changing form of the church. Those Christians who are tied to the status quo will resist it. Those who want more of God, no matter what it costs or where it leads, will welcome it.

Barna does a great job building his case by showing how the present form of church is failing and why. He then discusses the key features of every revolution and explains that the Christian faith is experiencing one in our time. In the next 20 years, the face of the church will change in some major ways.

I recommend this book along with the follow up books, "Pagan Christianity?," where Barna traces how the traditional church got its present form and why it should be questioned, and "Reimagining Church," which presents a fresh vision of the church based on the Bible.

These three books make a great set for revolutionaries young and old.

Good Observations --Questionable Conclusions

Barna claims to have synthesized years of research on American Christianity. His conclusion is that the institutional church is on the way out. Although not a pastor or theologian, Barna also argues that the demise of the institutional church should be encouraged. The author proffers three goals for Revolution. First, he seeks to describe how the American church is being reshaped. Second, he identifies who is doing the reshaping. Lastly, he invites dissatisfied believers to join the Revolution.

Revolution analyzes the social research, which provides the basis for the books observations and conclusions about the Church in America. Barna observes that there is a disconnect between churched Christians and a biblical lifestyle. He asks: if the local church is Gods answer to our spiritual needs, then why are most churched Christians so spiritually immature? The conclusion is that local churches are not doing their job.

"New models" of spiritual community are developing at the expense of the traditional model of church. The reasons for this shift include the desire for more choices, specialization of purpose, flexible scheduling and the quest for a deeper spiritual experience. Barnas criterion for determining the validity of any particular church "option" is simple: "does the mechanism provide a way of advancing the believers faith, without compromising Scripture or any of the passions of the true believer?"

The impact on the local church, as Barna sees it, is one of three possibilities: "to ignore the Revolution and continue business as usual, to invest energy fighting the Revolution as an unbiblical advance, or to look for ways of retaining their identity while cooperating with the Revolution as a mark of unity and genuine ministry." Churches that respond in the two former ways can expect declining attendance, a continued drop in donations, cutbacks in staff and salaries, and a reduction in political influence.

Barna anticipates critics those who will balk at anything that jeopardizes the traditional church model. But for Barna, church should be defined by result, not institutional characteristics. He argues there is no Scripture prohibiting these new models of church or any Scripture that requires the retention of the current institutional model for that matter. In fact, Scripture never describes church as it is currently practiced indeed it provides very little structure for church. For Barna, this observation is a green light to advocate a broad range of possibilities.

The Revolution can be divided into two basic impacts for the Church in America. The first is Barnas conclusion that the era of the local church is waning. The second is his argument that the local churchs demise will make way for better expressions of Christs Church. Both claims should be taken seriously, but for different reasons.

There are indications that if not waning, the local church in America is at least undergoing an identity crisis. Its hard not to conclude from Barnas evidence that American churches are diminishing in their spiritual influence. The observations that there is no difference in behavior between the churched and the unchurched as well as the growing trend by American believers to seek alternatives to the local church, is evidence that something has gone awry. Because this evidence is the result of valid social research in Barnas field of expertise, his conclusions should be taken seriously and addressed.

The second impact of Barnas Revolution for the American Church is his advocacy of new "options" for spiritual expression for believers. This is where Barna skates onto thin theological ice. If we start with the premise that spiritual growth begins with correct application of Scripture, Barnas argument is found wanting. His criterion for determining a valid option (that it simply not violate Scripture) begs the question. What is a biblical definition of church? Is an option viable simply because it does not expressly violate any of the Ten Commandments or are there biblical characteristics that define a church? Revolution never defines the visible local church nor does it help the reader identify a Scriptural basis for creating one.

In fact, Barnas ecclesiology leaves open the possibility that these church "options" and "Mini-movements", while they may not expressly violate any particular Scripture, will nonetheless militate against the biblical process of how people grow closer to God. What Revolution should have provided readers is analyses of the various church options in the context of the biblical process of sanctification and discipleship.

Barna offers no assurance that Revolutionaries are establishing biblical options. For example, there is no inherent requirement that options ensure that those who are more spiritually mature disciple those who are less spiritually mature (I Peter 5:1-5), or that believers be equipped to recognize and correct false teaching (II Tim. 2:15). Absent in The Revolutions description are the historically orthodox marks of the church -The Word, Sacraments and Discipline. If the Bible does not define the Church, what does? Apparently, in The Revolution, the individual believer does. Barna states that, "the individual believer now has sole responsibility for his or her own spiritual growth, the discipleship of others and promulgation of ministry." Another concern is that Revolution advocates "doing" church by identifying and imitating Jesus good works while Scripture clearly identifies that church is premised on the believer identifying who Christ is and being related to Him. Matt. 16:18 II Pet. 1:3.

Finally, Barna fails to preclude alternative causes for the loss of influence by the local church. It does not necessarily follow that a loss of influence means the local church model has become outdated. It may be, for example, that the local church is biblical but that American culture is drawing believers away from correctly promulgating church. By contrast, the local church model appears to be flourishing in countries lacking Americas wealth and culture of choice. If the "future models of church" offered in Revolution have a biblical basis, Revolution fails to articulate it. Barnas approach to church is particularly American - highly individualistic and independent. It may be that our cultures overvaluing of individualism and independence is influencing how we view church. Nonetheless Revolution does correctly observe that churches in America would do well to acknowledge their spiritual disabilities.

Many Churches operate like a Business not a Ministry!

Many churches especally the larger they become are functioning like a big business enterprise and not a Ministry which was once relevant to the timeless Gospel message of the Cross. As an example in this consumer age of attracting self-focused & self-seeking crowds churches are now using big screens, lively Christian rock music, big named Christian celebrities who drain the church finances with mega salaries they are paid to attract a large crowd, in some cases wordly Arcade games for the youth, secular movies with so-called PG ratings replace the timeless Gospel message of Jesus Christ crucified for our sins. Now the church of this age feels the need for worldly strategies to reach an already lost & spiritually dead world. These appeals are base and carnal and only creates a thirst for more & more gimmicks and enticements to excite unregenerated, self-seeking crowds. Why has quantity replaced quality? No wonder outsiders looking in see no difference in the unsaved world from the saved church.
What is needed is that the higger ups & leadership should be more sensitive to the real needs of the congregation: such as being there to visit the sick in the hospitals or be there when a loved one passes away go minister and witness the family (often unsaved) left behind. Being sensitive to the needs of members is what makes a lasting impact. Complaints from Mega church members may range from the fact that no one calls to give comfort when a loved one died, or no help or resource referral was offered when there was a devastating job loss or other tragedy. Megachurches must stay on top of these things because they matter more than having a Christian celebrity give a seminar for a fee.

First, by way of introduction, let me say that I have almost everything George Barna has written, and I stay up-to-date on his research by receiving mailings from his email list. Mr Barnas work is a revolution, and if the Church universal isnt listening, then it will continue to be in the doldrums as he describes it.

I come from an areligious background. That has been advantageous in that I dont have emotional baggage that keeps me bonded and protective of a certain theological model of the church local or Church universal. I am pretty free to evolve with G-ds plan for planet earth. But I do have certain Biblical convictions that I think that Mr Barna is missing in this book.

Im not sure of Mr Barnas theological studies and background, but this text seems to major in Biblical references to explicit passages about what the church is and isnt. Theres a whole lot of implicit teaching that leads down a different path in describing church polity.

In Mr Barnas vision of how the "revolution" is unfolding, he sees the majority of the "revolutionaries" operating outside of the historical church structure. Yet, much of the New Testament teaching on that structure is taught based on an understanding of what it already was in Jewish tradition. And that tradition was the synagogue.

Next, Paul teaches about deacons and elders. Jesus taught in Matthew 18 about how to handle the sinfully rebellious. None of that teaching is possible in Mr Barnas "open structure" of the local church.

Letters from Paul and the other New Covenant writers dont make sense with Mr Barnas lack of any structure in his vision of what the church should be. All of life has organization and rules. The local church is no different.

Im sympathetic with Barnas vision of what the church is and should be. I cant argue with his thesis in any way when we examine where we are, and where we need to be. I agree that present church denominational setup and control can militate against the evolution he prophesies. But I dont agree with throwing the baby out with the bath water.

How can I be accountable to other brethren unless there are those who are officially recognized as having the giftings who can disciple me? Where are the elders who can lay hands on those they recognize are called to certain ministries as the elders laid hands on Paul and sent him out? Where are those who have a depth of Scriptural knowledge that can keep His people from straying into cultish behavior?

Stepping outside the established church may in some cases be the right thing to do. Its very difficult to "build on someone elses foundation." If my local congregation isnt operating in a Biblical manner to achieve the objectives that Barna is advocating, the I would suggest its time to move, but I would stop short of moving to a group of people that dont have the structures in place to to effect the Scriptural model of a local congregation.

If I had any recommendations for George Barna, it would be to examine what I call the "missing theology." What is missing in the local congregation is COMMUNITY LIFE. Much of what George Barna is describing is that which cant possibly be accomplished unless an intimacy between believers is established that is much more than "hellos" and "good-byes" that are built around the Sunday morning services. Little in the New Testament can be operationally applied and lived without a serious community life that forces believers to be accountable to one another. Without community life, I cant confess my sins "one to another," and find the healing that James suggests is available in the Body dynamic.

A simplistic viewpoint? Yes. But relationships are not simple. Relationship is the basic Biblical teaching on which all other theologies depend. Relationship on the vertical and the horizontal is why G-d sent His Messiah to save us, so to reconcile us to one another, and to Him. Only a return to the realities of relationship will accomplish what George Barna is looking for. Barna has the right answers, but it appears that his questions need to be reframed.

With these caveats in place, I heartily recommend this book.

Perhaps the Best Book on Church Practices

Ive read a lot of books on church renewal and church reformation, but this one is probably the best. Each chapter explains that the practices of the church are based in the nature of God and the eternal relationship between Father, Son, and Spirit. The author then gives practical examples of his own experience in what he calls organic churches. Scripture is used throughout. The first sections deals with meetings and community life. The second section deals with leadership and authority. There is a great appendix that addresses all common objections and scripture verses that are often used out of context. The approach this book takes is unique and its one that helped me to understand the church in a new light.

The best book on organic churches on the market!

The term "organic church" first entered my ecclesiological vocabulary with Christian A. Schwarz book Natural Church Development (Churchsmart Resources, 1996). Now in its seventh edition, Schwarz book introduced many of us to a type of church growth that was natural -- organic.

Frank Viola is an influential leader in the modern House/Organic/Simple Church movement, and as such, has written a number of books encouraging readers to reexamine what it means to be the church. Violas latest book, Reimagining Church, may be his best yet. The book is written for the nonprofessional for people who are leaving or are considering leaving more traditional forms of church. This is a strength, in my judgment, and will insure a wide readership. Violas insights are accessible to everyone, unlike much missional church literature today, which is often written for seminary-trained church leaders.

This is good because Viola has much to say. Viola has spent some twenty years in simple or organic churches, and has some incredibly keen insights into how these churches can and should function. Issues of leadership, relationships, sacraments, church unity, decision-making and more are addressed frankly and thoughtfully. There is real wisdom in this book -- wisdom born of experience.

In my judgment, this book represents the best-articulated case for simple or organic churches Ive read. The chapter on church unity is, in my opinion, worth the price of the book, and confirms something Ive been thinking about for a while now. In my denomination (Churches of Christ), we have always said, or at least implied, that unity must be based on a common interpretation of Scripture. Obviously that hasnt worked out too well. If anything, weve become even more divided. Churches of Christ are often regarded as some of the most schismatic Christians on the landscape.

While I wouldnt argue for "agreeing to disagree" or "lowest common denominator Christianity," there must be a better way. Ive thought a lot recently that perhaps unity might be much more easily achieved in a smaller setting, within a family trying diligently to listen to God and do what he says. Viola tells the most wonderful story (pp. 132-33) about a group he was a part of made up of charismatics and (!) Church of Christ-ers. Once they surrendered their agendas to God and allowed God to re-teach them about the Holy Spirit, they achieved a remarkable unity, while retaining a wonderful respect for the authority of Scripture. I cant imagine this kind of thing happening nearly as well in an institutional church. Perhaps unity is more achievable in simple church settings than anywhere else.

Violas discussion of leadership is a breath of fresh air as well, and would easily be reproducible anywhere in any situation, unlike many top-heavy leadership development models.

There is deep, rich food in this book, and should be read by anyone who finds themselves disillusioned with traditional churches. One of the most common questions people at this stage ask is, "What does house/simple/organic church look like?" Frank Viola believes there really is a better way, and this book does a great job of showing us what that looks like.

This is an amazing read, I couldnt put it down. I now feel that I actually KNOW Paul, Peter, and all of the TRUE apostles in a personal way. To then read Pagan Christianity as a follow on has been enlightening to say the least. I thought I understood more than I did but am now delighted to feel so much more properly informed, with better understanding about the letters written, when and why. I fully reccomend it.

I had bought the other book - Pagan Christianity - from the author and I thought it was the best until I picked up this book. Truly an awesome book. If you had been confused regarding the epistles regarding the context, background, etc -- this book is for you. It tells a story (story from Acts) and takes you through the entire New Testament in order (except the Gospels because that is totally different work). After reading this book, you will look at the epistles in a totally different way.

The thing I liked about this book is that it included not only history and background to properly understand the context for the epistles on why, how and when they were written but also the fact that this book acted like a little workbook -- in a sense that author would give you details regarding a particular place, writer, context and would actually tell you to go read the epistle, which I found very very helpful. Five stars to this book, buy it and read it - you cant go wrong. You will see what I mean...

This book presents some information that is more than valuable for His true church. I really recommend reading this book and the others by Frank Viola. Hope it doesnt hurt your denominational feelings but, instead draws you to Christ.

Brilliant book-Frank does it again! After reading the other reviews there isnt much left to say apart from the fact that after reading this you will find that you understand and empathise with all the people in the New Testament so much more-they literally spring to life as you read through.You will understand WHY they did and said the things that dont seem to make much sense to us in the 21st.Century.Cant wait to meet them!(well most of them anyway)

I havent finished this book yet, however Im learning a lot from it.
In many ways the material confirms my own position on these matters.
But the clear Scriptural references that are given are very helpful in explaining the basic thoughts.
I can recommend this book and I hope it will help many people with the aspect of male leadership both in the family as well as in the church.
Im very pleased that it makes it very clear that it is not a matter of playing the boss, but instead stresses the special responsibilities the man has towards women in general and his wife and children specifically.

Not Biblical according to original Greek texts, grammar and Bible context.

Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood is a much needed response to the 20 and 21st century evangelical church disregarding the clear commands of Scripture. It seems as though a whole cottage industry of Evangelical feminist publications has been established to try to argue against what the Bible so clearly states - that God created both men and women in His own image(so that they both have worth and equal value), BUT He also created them different and with different roles to complement each other and in the home and in the church God established that men should lovingly lead. Gods created order is a good order, the feminism of our day has distorted that order, but Gods command and order stands true in every generation, men are to lead in the family and men are to lead and teach in the assembled church (woman are not prohibited from teaching children or other woman). This book provides a good vision and defense of, what on the face of it, to most Bible readers is clear and a scholarly refutation of those who deny this order.

Clowney sets out in 290 pages to address the issues of the churchs "abiding nature and mission." This he accomplishes, addressing every facet of each of these categories, typically by juxtaposing Reformed theology with the most prevalent error of today in a given area. This has two results: to teach the reader what the Bible teaches, but also to bring to light fascinating details of, for example, the syncretism of the World Council of Churches, or the misinterpretation of Acts of the charismatics. The image of the church Clowney presents is probably unfamiliar to most Christians, as elements such as church discipline, proper worship, and a correct doctrine of the spiritual gifts are sadly lacking today, especially in my own Southern Baptist denomination.

Clowneys work is not incredibly detailed, but references a great many other works. For the seminarian or pastor, it is sufficient to grasp a basic understanding of what the church is, what it should be, and where it has fallen into error or misunderstanding. It is also suitable for the lay person (in fact, I would recommend it).

The binding is, of course, paperback, and seems sturdy and of good quality. My copy shows very little wear after its first thorough reading. I found only one glaring typographical error (bottom of pg. 283). I understand the economics of paperback publishing, but this work deserves a hard cover.

A Tiring Exercise

The author presents a doctrinal overview of the church, setting forth its attributes, marks and ministry before dealing with such issues as leadership, women in the church, the use and abuse of supernatural gifts and the question of church sacraments.

While admiring the artful and comprehensive way in which Clowney sets forth his subject matter, I personally found too much of the book to be a tiring exercise in the retelling and listing of various doctrines of the church. That saddened me, first because I had found the authors book on preaching Christ in the Old Testament to be such a delightful breath of fresh air and also because a study of the church ought to be an exciting and invigorating topic. It seemed to me that, in these early chapter, Clowney gave us the doctrine of the church in the same timeworn generalities that systematic theologies have done in the past. All too often, I found these generalities to be divorced from the context in which this doctrine lives and breathes as it is given to us in the Scriptures. A book on systematic theology always runs this risk and my own experience in reading the book underscored that inherent danger.

On the other hand, Clowneys keen sense of the history of the church put flesh onto the principles set forth so that we were able to see how they had impacted the church in both ancient times as well as in recent history. I found those comments that traced the actions of the World Council of Churches particularly enlightening as I had not previously paid a great deal of attention to the actions of that group.

The authors treatment of the question of the gifts of prophecy in the church is of particular relevance in many of todays churches. He presents the views of his former student, Wayne Grudem, and a critique of those views is added almost as an afterthought.

Christians - Please Buy This Book!

In our culture, the church is almost irrelevant in the eyes of many Christians. It ultimately becomes a consumer item, and and people choose to attend the one that meets their "needs" the best. Dr. Clowney, a gifted scholar, gentle spirit, and dedicated churchman, has written an important work on what the church IS according to Scripture. Dr. Clowney, an ordained minister in the PCA, does not argue that any one denomination is the most biblical, instead, he shows what the Lord has called His church to be.

"If the church is to stand against the gates of hell, it must know its own divine charter, its bond to Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spiritual power of its calling. For the church to be the church in the year 2000, it must be more than seeker-friendly it must be Seeker-sent, thrust forth by the Lord to bear his gospel of the cross to the peoples." (from the preface).

Dr. Clowney deals with both the theological foundations of the church, and many issues that are controversial in Christendom today. But his arguments are Biblical, and his tone is gracious. Give this book a chance, and let the Lord use it to give you a greater love for the bride of Christ, his body- the church!

Gods Grace Makes a Glorious Church

Clowneys book The Church is a work of theological art. In it, Clowney paints deep and "artistic" images of the church using her historical beliefs and many Biblical texts.
Recently a very good friend of mine left the Protestant church and joined the Roman Catholic church. In my discussions with him over the years he mulled over his decision, the beauty of the Church seemed to take precedence in his mind. In his final decision, the Roman Catholic church best represented the beauty and doctrine found in the Bible. Before he converted, he mentioned some discussions he had in a class with a well known Protestant church leader. He requested the Protestant definition of the church. In the end, he was not satisfied with the answer. I wish he had read this book before he switched as I think he would have seen a representation of the church that was both true and beautiful.
One of the things my friend did not do will with, in my estimation, is dealing with the polemics between Protestants and Catholics. He did not like polemical arguments, tended to avoid them, and when he did engage them, he found that popular Protestant arguments did not accurately represent true Roman Catholic doctrine. As a result, he would often defend the Roman Catholic perspective.
One reason I like this book is that Clowney deals with a number of controversial topics without (for the most part) using polemical arguments. It makes for an attractive and positive presentation of the Protestant doctrine of the church. He deals with issues such as whether Peter is "the rock", whether women should be deacons, and other "hot topics", with clarity, conviction, and charity. Clowney bears his sword and deals with error, but does not malign his opponents before doing battle. As I reader, I found I was in awe of the way he wielded the sword, and hardly even noticed that he left his opponent in tatters. The one striking exception to this non-polemic presentation is his discussion on the doctrine of his former student and friend Wayne Grudem in a discussion of the continued relvance of prophecy today.
Overall, Clowneys "The Church" is an excellent theological book that motivates his readers to work for the the unity and purity of the church. Not overwhelming or unnecessarily negative, it helps Christians who love the Church to see the magnificent bride God is preparing for His Son. It helps to keep us on track for the most important things in this world.

This is a theological book on the doctrine of the church. But dont let that scare you. It is not so "theological" that a layperson cant read and understand it. The author is a covenant theologian, but even if you are dispensational the book is still very worthwhile. I especially liked the chapters on speaking in tongues and women in ministry. He covered these controversial issues in a thorough and precise way. I will definitely keep this book on my shelf as a reference source.

Book Review - Charismatic Chaos

Before I begin a review of Charismatic Chaos it is only fair to point out that I have really come to appreciate John MacArthur Jr. I cannot think of many contemporary authors whose beliefs and theology line up so closely with my own. So having been challenged to discern what the Bible says about speaking in tongues, signs and wonders and other marks of the charismatic movement, it only made sense that I would read Charismatic Chaos. Though written over twenty years ago, this book is as relevant to the Christian world today as it was then. The edition I read is the second edition, which was updated and published in 1992.

In recent years the Charismatic movement has completely infiltrated the church. Aspects of the movement are visible in almost every denomination. And as the movement grows in strength and acceptance it becomes more and more bizarre. It is not unusual to hear about flat tires being healed, fillings in teeth being turned to gold and other baffling (and unproven) phenomena. Almost any time of day or night there is a channel showing a faith healer healing with a touch or knocking people to the ground. Left unchecked, the movement will continue to grow and spread, becoming ever more strange.

The main issues MacArthur focuses on are modern day prophecies, ongoing revelation, Biblical interpretation, miracles, healings, tongues, and the "health and wealth" gospel. Ultimately, his arguments against these are based on a few points of doctrine.

First and foundationally, MacArthur teaches that experience cannot be accepted as a valid test of truth. Experience is only valid if it conforms to Gods word. This is hardly groundbreaking theology, yet is theology that has been forsaken by many Christian churches. Experiences can never be held as co-equal in importance to the Bible. Where there is a conflict the Bible must always prevail.

Second, he teaches that Gods inspired revelation ended with the closing of Scripture. Though God still reveals Himself, He no longer does so in an inspired way. Therefore, no other revelation can be held equal to the Bible. This puts all other revelation in subjection to Biblical principles.

Third, he teaches that the signs and wonders done by the apostles ended with the end of the apostolic era. These were signs given by God to achieve a specific purpose. They were given to prove that the apostles were Gods messengers on earth and that they were trustworthy sources of teaching. MacArthur shows how even through the Bible we see the signs disappearing so that even before the close of Scripture with the writing of the book of Revelation, these signs and miracles had ceased. This does not mean that God can no longer perform miraculous deeds. It does mean, though, that God no longer uses men to initiate these miracles as he did in Biblical times. Speaking in tongues also falls into the category of gifts that were given by God for a short time and a specific purpose.

MacArthur deals lovingly yet necessarily harshly with the Charismatic movement. He pulls no punches in rooting out the teachings that he considers dangerous. He does this all from a very simple, Biblical viewpoint. He does not waver in his view that the Charismatic teachings go directly against the pure simplicity of the gospel.

A fantastic Biblical examination of the Charismatic movement, this book comes with my emphatic recommendation.

This is a good read. Has a good common sense approach seen in the book. It is a rather lengthy book for the topic, atleast for me, but all the better because of it. Great job on addressing the prophesying and tongues issues (it is a sad state that some Christian brothers and sisters are in). I have had my experiences with the results of Pentecostal/Charismatic movements and was a long and painful experience for me to try my best to lovingly rebuke their false beliefs in Gifts, which have ceased and were never to be used in the manner in which they are used today (run-on sentence prob- Sorry). Plain reason, and indepth contextual readings of scripture (As well with a Koine Greek knownledge) seems to prevail against these false (and maybe even demonic) experiences. Many people of these movements will get uptight and upset about it but it is important to remember 2 Timothy 4:1-5

Good Biblical Examination of the Charismatic Movement

This book is a thorough evaluation and examination of the Charismatic movement. As usual MacArthur backs up what he says with Scripture.

This book could easily be used as a textbook for a class, but it is also very readable for the person interested in learning more about the Charismatic movement on their own.

Each chapter is segmented into questions that MacArthur answers. For example, the question for chapter 1 is "Is experience a valid test?" While answering that question, MacArthur introduces other questions related to that main question of each chapter. A sub-question for chapter 1 is "Was Peter a Charismatic?".

I found the presentation and layout of the material excellent and thoroughly examined.

Overall, I would recommend this book if you are interested in a Biblical evaluation of the Charismatic movement.

Tackling False Spirituality

I have attended a Charismatic Church for the past year. However, I was saved before I attended the Church. The realities of sin became very obvious to me. Moreover, the realities of suffering from sin slowly but surely became very apparent to me from the environment that I am exposed to.
The One who delivered me from these burdens was Jesus Christ. Knowing this and attending this Charismatic Church where they preach supernatural things in order for you to be a good and developed Christian did not at all settle well in my heart. I wanted Christ! not "spirituality(I say this loosely in this case)". There was a fallacy in that practice and John MacArthur does an extraordinary job in pointing out these fallacies in great detail and with great resolve. I now attend a Church called Faith Bible Church in Sharpsburg, GA. Its Shepherded by John Crotts who graduated from MacArthurs Masters Seminary. They strictly teach the Word and the Witness in that Church is amazing. Everybody is so humble, self-controlled, and best of all genuinely loving. None of this fake spiritual love stuff.

Irony in the Title

The irony of the title is that Dr. MacArthur discounts the time texts in the book of Revelation and their relevance to the first century believer to whom the letter was written. E.g.,

"The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants--things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, " (Rev. 1:1)

"Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it for the time is near. " (Rev. 1:3)

"Then he said to me, These words are faithful and true. And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent His angel to show His servants the things which must shortly take place. " (Rev. 22:6)

MacArthurs incomprehensible explanation of Rev. 1:1e on pages 20-21 does not even come close to addressing the meaning of the phrase "things which must shortly take place." And his interpretation of the phrase "the time is at hand" (the title of the book) in Rev. 1:3 is totally off them mark. MacArthur tries to give an explanation for time that fits with his theology, but which fails to do justice to the word, especially as it is found in the rest of the New Testament. Just compare what MacArthur says with Jesus statement in Matthew 26:18, "Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, The Teacher says, "My time is at hand I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples." " If we apply MacArthurs interpretative methodology to Matthew 26, the time for Jesus passion might have been delayed by thousands of years.

MacArthurs dispensational eschatology forces him to ignore any interpretation that would attempt to make sense of these words for the early Church, preferring instead to see most of Revelation taking place far in the future, not just their future but ours as well. Thus, the title of the book has no real meaning for MacArthurs brand of teaching.

Readers might wish to consider books and commentaries on Revelation that are not tied to futurism, such as: Triumph of the Lamb: A Commentary on Revelation by Dennis E. Johnson, The Book of Revelation (NIGTC series) by G. K. Beale, or Four Views on the Book of Revelation by Kenneth L. Gentry, Jr., Sam Hamstra Jr., Robert L. Thomas, and C. Marvin Pate.

This book is a commentary of Revelation. The author presents it in a fashion that it is easy to read. Not all commentaries are easy to read! It also is a scholarly work which has much depth. You will think and apply to everyday life.

I highly recommend it for preacher and student alike. This book is from a pre-tribulation and dispensationalist perspective.

The content of this book is excellent but I had to give it only 3 stars because the quality of the binding is very poor. Ive noticed this recently on the past 5 or 6 books that Ive purchased form Amazon. The conver is almost the same weight as the pages and the binding falls apart before you finish the book. I have started returning to the traditional Brick and Mortar bookstores to purchase my books. I may have to pay a little bit more, but at least the books stay in one piece. Amazon must be running some sort of print on demand deal with their authors and are using a cheap printer. Amazon needs to up the quality of the the books they sell or risk losing customers.

I have been a fan of John MacArthur for years. In fact when I became a Christian 24 years ago he was the first preacher I ever heard on the radio. This book examines the hard passages in the Bible. The ones the seeker friendly churches avoid. I agree that without repentance there is no forgiveness of sin. I like John dont believe that repentance is legalism or works..Check out my Christian fiction novel..The Palace Theatre

Are you aware that John MacArthur is a Fundamentalist? Grace Community Church is a member of the IFCA (The Independent Fundamental Churches of America). The IFCA is pre-millennial and dispensational (pre-trib) in their eschatology. And many are hard core Calvinistic in the rest of their doctrines as is Grace Community Church. MacArthur should be more upfront about what his church affiliation is.

Having attended Grace for a couple of years in the early 90s and read several of his books, I was not aware of the IFCA affiliation (maybe I missed the small print). MacArthur comes across as a conservative evangelical who is in opposition to the drift that is going on in evangelicalism. This is misleading. His affiliation is fundamentalist, not evangelical (NAE). It is OK for a fundamentalist to critique evangelicals, but should this not be disclosed?

I thought of this book as just another chapter in his "Gospel According To Jesus" theme that sparked the Lordship debate. It is really sad that so many evangelicals make such easy targets for this kind of book.

This book blew me away. The author (one of my very favorite preachers) starts with Luke 9:23, in which Jesus is quoted as saying, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me." He then proceeds to tell it like it is, explaining that while salvation is a free gift of God, there is a cost to following Christ - a willingness to deny self and submit to the will of God.

I truly enjoyed this book. John Macarthur brought to the light so many issues that the church as a whole faces today, issues that need to be addressed with the boldness and confidence that Macarthur approaches his writing of this text.

i recommend this book to those who are ministering to friends and families that go to "Six Flags over Jesus" kind of churches. The kind of church that in order to bring people in would put a light show with a rockband on stage, a Starbucks in the entrance and would never ever speak about our sins. MacArthur describes the flaws of these churches and Ministers that would not talk about sin because is offensive to people.Mac Arthur helps the reader realize that sin is offensive to God and that is why we need Jesus as our savior.

For those of us who have read Warrens books and come away with the feeling that we had just encountered "Gospel lite: tastes great, less filling," but couldnt pin down exactly why, this book hits the mark exactly. It wont, however, convince the Warrenites, who have so embraced the Warren brand that they are unwilling to open themselves to the real message of Jesus Christ - which includes suffering, confession, repentance, and atonement, none of which youll find in Warrens ad campaigns.

Mr. Davis attack on the "Purpose Driven Life" is superficial and misguided.

He contends that "In Warrenism there is no genuine commitment to Christ because the genuine Christ has not been preached." The commitment to Christ and His church required for membership at Rick Warrens church is the same commitment that has been preached for almost 2000 years of church history. In fact, the expectations for a Saddleback member are far higher and more biblical than those of many, if not most, evangelical churches in the history of our nation. People may initially come as "consumers" as Mr. Davis contends, (dont most of us start our journey with Christ needing something from Him? forgiveness, love, hope?) but Christ turns most into devoted followers with servant hearts who are involved in ministry and missions in obedience to Jesus.

A comprehensive review of Warrens preaching and teaching would reveal that Ricks message is not watered down or anything less than the full council of Scripture. Mr. Davis simply has not done his homework on these issues. As for "The Purpose Driven Life," it is a simple, but not simplistic, introduction to the Christian life. Warren is not seeking to write a systematic theology for long time believers. (Although the "Foundations" series that Purpose Driven has produced is a solid and thorough treatment for laity). The fact that Mr. Davis would write a book like this explains why many churches in America are failing.

My advice? Follow Christ. Get busy accomplishing your God given purpose within your local church and community and dont waste your time on this book.

This book is an excellent source on the true nature of the purpose driven church. This movement is not entirely bad, but it falls way short of the true nature and purpose of what the bride of Christ should be and the message it is to proclaim.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know why the megachurch is so successful in creating members but not as successful in creating disciples. This book answered a lot of my questions about why I was not satisifed after visiting a couple of megachurches.
These churches are great self-help seminaries and training grounds for people who want to buils their self-esteem.
As for myself and a lot of other believers, we want to go to church to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ preached from the pulpit. We want to hear about the birth, life, death, burial and ressurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. That is the foremost reason for going to church and the rest is just icing on the cake.

If you want to really find out what Rick Warren believes, read the Statement of Faith made by Saddleback Church. No hidden agendas, and youll find it is based on sound doctrine. Also if you want to get the other side of the controversy this book participates in creating, read "Rick Warren And The Purpose That Drives Him" Rick Warren and the Purpose That Drives Him: An Insider Looks at the Phenomenal Bestseller

The claim in this book that the Gospel isnt taught at Saddleback and there is no real commitment to Christianity, is unfounded. One thing that most will agree is that as a Christian who is effective in winning souls to Christ, you will face much spiritual opposition. Rick Warren seems to face a lot of it. Test his teaching against the correct interpretation of Scriptures before you make up your mind about him.

If you havent been formally trained on proper biblical interpretation, take a look at this book - "Basic Bible Interpretation" by Roy Zuck Basic Bible Interpretation, also biblical study techniques "Living by the Book" by Howard Hendricks Living By the Book: The Art and Science of Reading the Bible Then you would be qualified to disagree on the finer points of theology if you had differences with his position on Soteriology. There are legitimate questions that are debated in areas Scripture has not been completely clear. But, by no means are those who disagree on these issues to be considered heretics, or to be publicly criticized. We will never know all the answers until Christ returns.

After dinner, I started reading Warren Smiths book, "The Light That Was Dark," and kept reading until 3:00 in the morning -- only needing sleep kept me from reading clear through to the end. It is one of the best written life-changing stories I have read. You forget you are reading a book, and find yourself right there with Warren as he is taking you through his jorney from a very much involved New-Ager, seeking to do only good -- but finding he had gotten himself caught in a dark demonic world. He then takes you through his incredible rescue by the REAL Jesus. All I can say is -- get the book!

Warren Smith gives a fantastic account of how he left the New Age/Occult movements of the world and found the Lord Jesus Christ. This is a sometimes chilling and definately moving book that will really bring to light the battle raging around us that we cannot see in the Spiritual world. I would highly recommend anyone to read this novel as we see these demonic practices becoming more and more prevelent in the days we are living in.

I enjoyed this book by Warren Smith, and found it to be well-written, thoughtful, and honest. Mr. Smith is very open in the book about the events of his life that led up to his involvement with the New Age. I found that he really took risks, as some of the stories that he shared (specifically about the "Mad Magician") could be used against him by people who support the New Age Movement.

My favorite passage in the book is on p. 147: "Finally, after all we had been through, I was starting to see that the heart of the gospel is not so much that God helps those who help themselves, but, rather, that God helps those who cant help themselves. It was not in affirming our strength but in recognizing our weakness that we had finally learned to ask the Lord for help. It was His grace, not our own self-sufficiency that had saved the day."

This would be a good book to give someone who is involved in the New Age Movement or the occult. Read this along with Inside the New Age Nightmare by Randall N. Baer. This is a good account of one persons (actually two) experience with chasing spirituality the wrong way and finding out that evil actually exists despite what some New Age teachings say. Its a good lesson, and a quick easy read. I read it in one weekend and I usually take weeks to finish a book. My take is this: if evil exists in the material world around us, then why wouldnt it exist in the "higher" realms above us, but in a more sophisticated form? Asking blindly for any and all spiritual assistance from the "other side" is as foolish as a blind person standing on an inner city street corner and yelling for any available help. They might get helped or they might get mugged. Better to have a seeing eye dog or friend along who knows the territory. Overall, I liked the book.

This analysis of what Christians can learn from Hindus, and conversely what Hindus could learn from Christians is lucid and to the point. It was redacted from a series of lectures or teachings given by Bede Griffiths at a Catholic setting in the U. S. and thus has the clarity and simplicity of the spoken word.

Griffiths conclusion is that God has revealed Himself truly in the heart and in the cosmos to Hindus, but that there is still something of value in Christianity that cannot be found in Hinduism.

This is an excellent primer to Hinduism, as all the sacred Hindu books are briefly explained and all the key concepts of Hinduism are touched upon. One could read a number of other books and not have as clear a sense of the context of Hindu understanding as he gives here.

The fact that his insights are the fruit of 25 years of living out his Christian contemplation in a Hindu context makes his insights very well-balanced. He recognizes both the obvious and the more subtle weaknesses in Hinduism, and yet he also values it enough to live as a sannyasi in an ashram.

Like him, I find that I can understand who Jesus is more clearly when I see him in an eastern context.

It is also quite fascinating to see how connected Sanskrit and the western languages are. The first western scholar who worked on Sanskrit could hardly believe his eyes when it became obvious to him that Sanskrit had ties to Latin and Greek.

Yet consider this, which is my own interpretation: the Ancient Sanskrit for God is Dyaus Pita, meaning Sky Father. We can obviously see that Pita is related to Pater and thus to Father. But what is Dyaus? Is not the Latin for God Deus? (Spanish Dios, Greek Theos) I dont think Im imagining things when I see God the Father in the Sanskrit Sky God.

We are One at the deepest level, but even on the surface level, we are far more inter-connected than the school books would lead us to believe. Columbus may have been trying to get to India the wrong way round, but it is clear to me that there was cultural contact in very ancient times.

Shirley du Boulay has given us a beautifully crafted biography of one of the most interesting Christians of our time. In many ways, Bede anticipated and served as a center of gravity for the new winds that blew through Christianity in the last third of the twentieth century. He advocated a decentralized, collegiate authority in the Roman Catholic church, and worried about doctrinal intolerance and insularity. Most importantly, he recognized that the worlds faith traditions can indeed enter into a conversation with one another in which each enriches the other. By the end of his life, after having spent 30 odd years in Christian ashrams in India, hed become a proponent of nondualism or advaita, accepting a radical panentheism that tried to honor the both/and of intuition as opposed to the either/or of rationality.

Du Boulays biography discusses Bedes personal life, but wonderfully summarizes the successive stages of his journey toward God. Ordinarily biographies are best read only after some familiarity with their subjects writings. But this one is an excellent introduction to the thought of Bede.

Bede Griffiths was a luminary in the interfaith dialogue, and during his lifetime he helped many Christians to come to a new appreciation of the contemplative roots of their own faith by inviting them to explore the spiritualities of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. Unfortunately, the interest in interfaith dialogue and exchange that he encouraged seems to have waned in recent years, and particularly after 9/11.

Inspiring Reading and Excellent Reseach

I loved reading Beyond the Darkness. I always feel that I should read and know about the spiritual writers and teacher I admire and have been influential. But I must confess to hardly ever being able to finish the majority of biographies and autobiographies I have bought over the years. However, Shirley du Bouleys account of Bede Griffiths, his life, teachings, influences and ideas is an exception and made it onto a short list of those that I could not put down until I had finished.

Just by looking at Shirley du Bouleys notes, one can see that she has done her research, drawing not just from the main published works of the great man, but from many unpublished sources. Additionally, her knowledge of Christian, Hindu and Yogic spirituality shows great depth and understanding - many lesser knowledgeable writers might not have been able to tackle all these traditions together so well and in such a fluid style.

What I also loved about Beyond the Darkness, is that it is no rose-tinted overview of Bedes life, and is not afraid to shows him as being only too human at times, with problems and difficulties just like the rest of us, which for me, made him come to life much more and be someone to personally relate to.

Bede Griffiths was for many people one of the great spiritual men of the last century. His own autobiography was a best seller. But, for me, Beyond the Darkness is more insightful, as it continues where he left off - his journey to, and inclusive and interfaith experiments in, India - and takes us deeper into the mature years of his spiritual growth and the final revelation he had of the Divine Mother.

Father Bede Griffiths (1906-1993) was an English Benedictine monk who resided in India for nearly four decades. Ms. du Boulays book is the first major biography written about him since his death, and I, for one, bought it as soon as I could. Her meticulous, though not overwhelming, attention to the many facets of his life provides a fascinating and incredibly balanced perspective of this man of many roles: monk, mystic, writer, lecturer, and leader in Hindu-Christian interreligious dialogue. For all that I admired his embracing warmth and sheer wisdom, it helped to know just how much he had to live through i.e. she does not shy away from describing with excruciating clarity some of the vicious verbal and written attacks from both Hindu and Christian fundamentalists he endured. My hope is that this very well crafted biography brings the importance of Father Bedes vision and life into the consciousness of many seekers. Highly recommended (along, of course, with his own writings--most of which remain in print).

C. S. Lewiss pupil -- into the darkness?

Admirers of C. S. Lewis often like to read about his life and to become vicariously acquainted with his friends, too. If you want to know about Lewis as Griffiths friend, read Griffiths own autobiography (The Golden String), his contribution to C. S. Lewis at the Breakfast Table, and The Letters of C. S. Lewis. (It is much to be hoped that all of their correspondence that survives will be published.)

However, admirers of Lewis may be advised that these two men profoundly diverged in their religious thinking. While Lewis was an apologist for orthodox Christianity, Griffiths eventually said he could understand Christ only by means of the Vedanta that Jesus rejected the God of the Old Testament that only a bit of St. Johns Gospel attained to the insight of Hindu "advaitic" mysticism, etc. For readers whose faith is close to that of Lewis -- who said he was as dualistic as possible within Christian theology, meaning preoccupied with good and evil, and aware of Gods warfare with the devil -- this book might have been better titled "Into the Darkness" of spiritual error. The book is readable and informative, presented by a biographer who wishes to promote Griffiths "deep ecumenism."

While vastly inferior to Bedes own writings about his life ("The Golden String" especially), this book gives a great account of Bedes development from his formative years at Eastington, where he engaged in a Waldenesque experiment in "simple living" (which left a lasting mark upon him) to his nearly forty years in his ashram in India. Bede shows himself to be a genuinely ecumenical man, taking a wealth of ideas and concepts from all religious traditions that he comes into conduct with (but especially the Hindoo faiths). A man years ahead of his time, he would most probably had been excommunicated if many of his ideas had received more attention in the Roman church. He was in favour of radical reform of the Catholic Church, which he had began to think was outdated and did not speak to people in the way that it once did -- and that if it did not change its approach to speak to people in this modern day, that it would eventaully cease to be of relevance altogether. He was in favour of a married clergy and denied that the pope should be the head of the whole church, but that this was a corruption of the original church which had the pope of Rome as merely the "first among equals" -- a position that he was supposed to share equally with various other bishops throughout Christendom. His theology tended to be on the mystical side, which, to me, makes much more sense than the Biblical literalism that is sweeping the world today. He was also of the opinion that Jesus message was at odds with the Old Testament, but that it agreed in all its essentials with the teachings of the Gita. His embracing of the similarities of Christianity and Hinduism was particularly impressive, especially in this day of finger-waggling evangelistic denominationalists who assure us that only they can be right. Bede always kept an open mind and was a seeker until the very end. He never stopped growing and learning -- something that would have been impossible if he had closed his mind to any other opinions other than his own. He is an example of a very, very rare type of individual. A wonderful look at an amazing human being.

Of all Griffiths books this is surely the most beautifully written and the most profoundly mystical. In the first chapter he gives a kind of progress report by reflecting on what life in India has done to him, on how his mind has developed over the years, on the changes that have taken place in his way of life and in the depths of his soul. As a framework for all this he explores the meaning of the three vows of religious life: poverty, chastity, and obedience.

He understands humans as products of evolution, including the evolution of consciousness, and culture and religious expression as conditioned by history. What makes humans unique is their capacity for self-transcendence, and this is what religion is all about. Each religion is a culturally determined medium (or vehicle) to undertake the search for ultimate reality or absolute being. This reality has been revealed in a variety of ways in different circumstances and historical epochs.

In subsequent chapters, Griffiths looks at the meaning of original sin as a failure to appreciate the idea of interiority. He looks at the eternal nature of each person as a thought in the mind of God. Death, he says, should not be feared or despised but regarded as a sacrament of passage into eternal life. He contrasts the eternal religion with the church as a sacramental entity and explores each of the higher religions in terms of three features they all share: organization, ritual, and doctrine. In a fascinating later chapter he speaks of the Spirit as the feminine principle guiding the development of the world. Not all Christians will be pleased with this authors critical views of the Church. But they are views with which we can all agree after some reflection on our own history and culture and on the real meaning of our own religious belief and practice.

I purchased this version of the monks of Santo Dominto De Silos at the same time I bought the 2008 edition of the Gregorian chant by the Cistercian Monks of Stift Heiligenkreuz (Chant: Music for the Soul). While the effort of the Santo Domingo monks was highly praised when it was released, I fully understand why the version by the Cistercian monks of Stift Heiligenkreuz was so brightly hailed. The Spanish recording seems regimented, in contrast to that of the Austrian Cistercian monks of 2008, who seem quite sublime, un-regimented, and singing only in response to their devotion to God. Even so, this recording by the Spanish monks is clear, pure, and by the books it is authentic. If you are interested in Gregorian chant, you should have a chant rendition of this style in your repetoire because these fellows deliver it in a style considered normal in the recording world before their performance was usurped for many by the Austrian monks.

The monks of Santo Domingo de silos follow the rites and traditions of the ancient Mozarabic period of Hispania (modern day Spain). This period stemmed from the Visigothic period of control over the former Roman protectorate. And from this period throughout the generations this form of pure, magical and yet authentic chant has been saved and will continue to be saved. I brought this CD initially for my stepdad but I decided to keep it with me after listening to it. I fell in love with the sound, the atmosphere and it made me great when I listened to it.
I hope to one day visit the abbey and listen to these chants in person and live. 22 tracks of solid gold chants and the voices are so in sync with each other that the real mystery is why there is not more monasteries like this one.

I am a writer, so I got this CD to listen to while I write. Each chant on this CD is a jewel in its self. The voices are mystical and haunting and at the same time so peaceful, each of the singers is so insync with the others. When listening to this CD, I feel like I am transported into a medieval abbey surrounded by gregorian chant. I have heard many gregorian chant albums and this is by far one of best, it had the richness and a haunting, beautiful quality that many of them lack.

While I agree with the other reviewers that this is a fine recording, two precisions are necessary for the sake of accuracy. The disc is titled "Gregorian Chant" but in fact it is Mozarabic or Old Spanish Chant. The reviewer who wrote that the monks observe this rite is mistaken. The monks observe the same monastic rite as the monks of Solesmes and other Benedictine abbeys. The choir director at the time (1968), however, is a musicologist who prepared a special program of Old Spanish Chant for the historically based Archiv Produktion of Deutsche Grammophon.

If you like this type of modern music presented in a unique style with some excellent voices give this a try. the style is not to everyones tast, Im hooked and my usual preference for music is more like linkin park and evanescence. But i love this in heavy traffic on the way home, it keeps down the road rage without having to listen to archaic religious latin verse.

Yet the singing of these Spanish Benedictines has a special quality that probably explains this discs popularity--a reverent serenity that no doubt stems from the fact that the monks are actually praying, not just performing. Granted, Chant can become a bit monotonous with repeated listening, but it really gives you the sense of devotion that has always been the purpose of "Gregorian" chant. If this recording (ahem) enchants you at first, wonderful. CHANT arrived in good condition ahead of the promised delivery date and for a bargain price. The singing is well done. However, I never recognized one selection of the ultra long list of chants that are a radical departure from Kyrie Eleison and Magnificat anima mea. I played it while in bed and drifted off to sleep even after being kinda disappointed in the selections. This is not saying YOU wont be transfixed and inspired by the rhythm, melodies, and selections chosen by the totally-dedicated monks.

When I was growing up in Northern Michigan we had a magnificent choir at our church. My father had a wonderful baritone voice, Mrs. Dix played the huge pipe organ, her husband could have been a concert violinist. Frank Toriano had a tenor voice that certainly could have made him a part of the New York Met, had he so chosen. All of this to tell you readers of this review that many of these songs on this CD were sung regularly in our church. These priests do such a beautiful rendition of each of them that I could not help but think that the Dixes, Frank, the other members of the choir and my dad were singing along with me as I sung along with "The Priests". In these so troubled days throughout the world and in our own country, it is so great to witness pure, beautiful, God given talent, used for His greater glory and honor. David A. Sullivan

A friend sent me the link to "The Singing Priests" website. I was curious.....Ive seen the movie, "The Singing Nun", Im attending line dancing classes taught by a "dancing nun" but Ive never heard of "singing priests". The website provides interesting information on the three priests: their lives, work and "CD premier". So I placed an advance order of the CD through Amazon.com Ive been listening to the CD every day ever since I received it. The priests sing like the professionals and their voices are so pure, "prayerful and heavenly"! BTW I purchased another 4 CDs as Christmas gifts - they make good Christmas gifts!

Fathers Eugene and Martin OHagan, and Father David Delargy have all been singing together since they were seminarians, and their exertions have landed them a reputed multi million pound record deal with SonyBMG.

Taking leaves of absents from their parishes to record their debut album with producer Mike Hedges ( The Cure, U2, Dido, Manic Street Preachers, Travis, Texas, The Beautiful South ), theyve also had that subsequent album released simultaneously in an astonishing thirty two territories.

That aside, you can guarantee that as sure as day follows night, the Christmas season will see a host of opera and opera-related albums lining the shelves of your local music shop. The distinction between the likes of Il Divo and Paul Potts and this album, however, is that the religious overtones are obviously genuine: hymns like Panis Angelicus and Pie Jesu are wrapped in an authenticity that cant be faked by talent show winners.

The first track Ave Maria, an organic-sounding, unforced reading of the classic aria, is a good measure of what is to follow: The Priests is largely a collection of beautifully-arranged and mostly understated classical and devotional pieces, with vocals (two tenors, one baritone) that are remarkable and moving,. The song choices, too, are largely less-obvious than the stalwarts than turn up on every similar album: Haydns regal Mit Wurd und Hoheit Angetan works very well, and the cinematic production on Benedictus breaks up the tedium that the cheesier numbers (Irish Blessing, Abide With Me) induce joy and happiness.

Wonderful music and setting

I first saw this concert on the Disney Channel in the early eighties and taped it on VHS, but eventually the tape wore out. It features many of Taylors greatest hits as well as several songs from his then new album New Moon Shine, especially The Frozen Man, which is my personal favorite James Taylor song. Due to the time in which it was made, the picture is not up to todays digital standards, but the music is well worth the price, and I do recommend this DVD.

Unlike a number of previous purchasers of this DVD, my DVD was flawless ... and well worth the price. You either like JT or you dont. This DVD is a remastering of the VHS tape initially offered by PBS as a reward for a $180 donation. The setting is JTs studio on Marthas Vineyard. Beautiful area. Relaxed. Casual. Laid back ... but with excellent songs, vignettes and imagery. Beautiful surrounding and ambiance. Wonderful back-ground singers. JT: He is what he is. BTW: the video-sound timing on my DVD was excellent, as was the sound quality. Buy it!

Of all places, I first heard this CD playing in a gift-shop on Sanibel Island, Florida. As one who is attracted to the instrumental jazz ballad, I was quickly compelled (after a few minutes of listening) to ask the store clerk what CD this was, quite sure that it was probably Oscar Peterson or some other legend of the cool jazz idiom. Instead, it was Beegie Adair, whom Id never heard of. Now, not only have I heard of her, but I cant wait to hear more of her.

This CD is a collection of George Gershwin songs played by Nasvhille pianist Beegie Adair and her trio. And she is certainly more than suited to playing Gershwin, as her cool behind-the-beat piano stylings are some of the most lyrical Ive heard. She is a terse player who, instead of using a whole slew of notes, manages to find just the right notes to solo with time and time again. Because of this, she is capable of filling the space to even the slowest of ballads (not to mention the mid-tempo stuff) with a delicate flair.

For those that have not heard Adair before, there are a few comparisons I can give. I was not suprised, for instance, when her website listed Oscar Peterson and Russ Freeman (Chet Baker Quartet) as two of her main influences. She has both the melodicism of Peterson and the cool, laid back approach of Freeman. Another comparison I might give is with the PIANO stylings of Diana Krall. Adairs solos, like Kralls, are delicate and understated but beautiful nonetheless (not to mention the obvious similarity in their song selections.)

To close, the only problem I had with this CD was that neither of the other instrumentalists (bass and drums) were given a chance to solo. Normally, I dont like bass or drum solos much, but 13 songs of all piano soloing can become a bit much if not broken up by other solos. Because of that, I find that the CD is hard to listen too all the way through as beautiful as Adairs soloing ability is, it becomes a bit monotonous when that is ALL there is.

Still, I have to give this one 5 stars. Adair is just that good.

A great mix of smooth, romantic tempos that provide the right amount of classy musical/holiday ambience. I wont write a lengthy dissertation on this CD. Suffice it to say that if youre looking for a nice jazz CD to play in the background during the holidays or to listen to closely, this is a really good choice. Nothing to harsh or too mellow. Just the right upbeat tempo.

Beegie Adair is a great jazz pianist. As a listener of Erroll Garner, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Gene Harris etc, I didnt know Beegie Adair. In fact, I discovered Adair because of the reviews of my Amazon friend Mr. Jim (J. Lovins).

I liked very much her interpretations of the standards.

For anyone who loves Hilary Stagg and wishes he were still among us to produce more of his wonderful music, this album at least gives you one more for your collection. The new pieces of music on the CD are from admirers and fellow-muscians who knew and loved Hilary, such as Andreas Vollenheimer and 2002, and they are very nice pieces. This world is a sadder place without Hilary, but I hope hes looking down on us and smiling knowing that we can still enjoy his wonderful music.

I have to be honest here and say that I really dont like most harp music, so my previous experience with Hilary Staggs music has only been from Real Music compilation albums. However, this collection is so lovingly crafted and the liner notes are so heartfelt and compelling that it is impossible to not get caught up in this CD. Staggs life was cut short in 1999, and this album is a collection of eight pieces from his five original albums plus a piece composed for this tribute by 2002, and two pieces contributed by Kevin Kern and Andreas Vollenweider, Staggs primary source of musical inspiration. The music is soothing and peaceful, and is a great way to unwind and slow down the pace. The liner notes are full of testimonials from people who have been amazingly moved and healed (physically and emotionally) by Staggs music. His music has touched many lives, and will continue to do so. If you need some spiritual uplifting or just some sweet, gentle music to slow down the heart rate, this will definitely do the trick!

Stagg, playing an acoustic-electric harp, intertwines his peaceful, laconic playing with a small ensemble (acoustic and electric guitars, synthesizer, violin, occasional percussion) to create moods that mostly occupy a midrange between earthy and ethereal. The first two selections, "Easy Days" and "For My Love," convey an almost countrified demeanor (with occasional slide-guitar sections lazily, effectively accenting the mix), giving you a mental picture of a barefoot Stagg a-pickin and a-blissin on his cosmic back porch. The affect is appealing, and Staggs unhurried touch adds a nice grass-blade-in-your-teeth, lounging-in-the-meadow atmosphere to tracks such as "Lovers Reunion" and "Peaceful Journeys." In my business, as a massage therapist, you want to create the right atmosphere for your clients. When my middle child was a baby she was extremely fussy and would cry and scream for hours (day or night). One day she started up in a shop we were in and I started to leave when the owner said "Wait" and turned on Feather Light. My child stopped crying immediately and started looking around to find the source of the music. I purchased it on the spot! It became her day and night music that soothed her every time. Shes 12 now and weve had to purchase this CD 4 times because weve worn them out. We love all the Hilary Stagg CDs, its not just music you listen to, its music you can feel.

Warning! This CD may bring tears to your eyes. It is probably the most touching music I have ever heard. If youre looking for gentle music for meditation, massage or quiet reading time, try this. There is not a song I dont just love on this album - there are no surprises from the samples youll hear. I also purchased Dream Spiral but it didnt have the same impact on my soul as this one did...and continues to do so. A great gift for any massage therapist!

will make you feel like youre doing! The music is both stirring and evocative...pulling up emotions from the depth of your being. "Sweet Return", "Reflections of Love" and "Forever
and A Day" are perhaps my favorites, but its difficult to choose, because every single song is great.
I discovered the music of Hilary Stagg after his death...and am regretful of that. His untimely death was a great loss to the world of music. So, dont miss the opportunity to buy this CD. You wont regret it!

...I happened onto a sampler including two of Hilary Staggs recordings - "Reflections of Love" and "Pleasant Dreams". Having never heard of Hilary, I listened to a few of his album recordings, bought "Sweet Return" and "The Edge of Forever" and have been listening ever since while driving as well as in the evening when drifting off to sleep. His acoustic harp and choice of accompanying instrumentation is absolutely beautiful. While some other great instrumental musicians like Yanni, David Lanz, Jim Brickman, etc. tend to "wear" on me after awhile, Hilary Staggs music retains its freshness even if listened to over and over. Although I understand Hilary passed away a few years ago, I cant believe Id never heard of him and his music until now. This musician was a true, true artist and genius.

The Edge of Forever is an excellent album. Hilary Stagg plays very soft and soothing harp music combined with keyboards, flutes and some vocals. I loved his music from the moment I heard it and it is highly recommended to anybody who likes soft music. But, if you like music with more of a beat to it there is also another harpist named Andreas Vollenweider and he plays music combined with drums a lot of other instruments.

There is not much I can say about the songs on the album because most songs have the same notes other than saying that every song is worth a listen to.

This CD was my first introduction to acoustic harp music. Anyone looking for sublime, peaceful, ethereal, inter-dimensional music that connects you to the realm of Spirit ... purity ...innocence ... HERE IT IS! This CD will clear your stress. It will melt feelings of anxiety... they will disappear. It is not an exaggeration. In fact, the listener may well find problems and cares will be viewed from a different light. I listen to a lot of different new age music (Suzanne Cianni, Lorenna McKennit, Windham Hill, Michael Gettel, etc) and Hilary Stagg has recently become my favorite (my massueuse introduced me to it). When I listen to his music Im instantly transferred to a quiet and peaceful place.

A wonderful CD from the talented Martin Tillman

I love this CD! Those who may be familiar with Martin Tillman from his CDs with Michael Hoppe, The Poet and Afterglow, wont be disappointed with this CD of piano and cello music. Since first hearing him in 1997 on Hoppes The Poet, I have been waiting for Tillman to record his own CD of cello music. Tillman, a classically trained cellist, plays both piano and cello on this multitrack CD.

The CD features, with the exception of one piece, Tillmans own compositions, and these are varied and interesting. Some are deep and brooding, as in Eileen, while others, bassalino and tangobay, are up-beat with latin rhythms. The piece, bachwards has a Bachian/jazz feel to it, with piano plucked cello and snare drum. My own favorite is white oleander, a very haunting piano and cello duet. Tillmans fine solo piano work is featured in, is it me or the moon passing. The piece february in mazuria was written while on a visit to his wifes native Poland and has a very classical feel to it. Tillmans own liner notes give us insight into his musical journey from Zurich to Los Angelus.

If you are looking for some cello music that is not classical, yet is soulfully brings out the qualities of this most wonderful stringed instrument, then this CD is worth buying. Very highly recommended.

We associate George Barna with sociological studies about Christian faith and culture, intended to help pastors and churches be more effective. This book is something very, very different. In Pagan Christianity Barna and Frank Viola analyze contemporary worship and practice in an attempt to show how much paganism it has absorbed in 2000 years. Not everything here will be new to you we have long known that Christianity, particularly our worship, picked up quite a few cultural artifacts along the way. But are those fatal to the faith? One cant help but think of Hisslops The Two Babylons, and the highly doubtful thesis that every smidgen of extra-Christian, extra-Protestant influence adheres to the church and hopelessly contaminates current Christian practice. Pagan Christianity comes across as negative and slightly scolding, which is especially sad because it is under the byline of someone who has been the champion of innovative church leadership. The authors point seems to be that the only legitimate Biblical expression of our faith will be Acts-style pastorless house churches. The rest of us are going about it all wrong. Im not sure Pagan Christianity contributes much toward helping us to get it right.

Not for the faint of heart

I loved the book, but reading it (I stopped only to eat and sleep) from cover to cover was a little like giving birth in all its grit and glory with no medication for discomfort. And there was major discomfort !

This book is not for sissies or the faint at heart. But for the pioneer who is willing to "go for broke" in search of the promised land, this book may be the catalyst to help you take that first step. By the end of the book I had jumped off the cliff. I am still a bit stunned, but in a good way. I think.
I am waiting for the next book, Reimagining Church, to come in the mail.
The only thing I know about church right now is that I have yet to experience it the way it was meant to be. I am more in love with Jesus than ever and for the first time in many years, I feel that I can truly approach Him, as a child, and really hear His voice.
Thanks, Mr. Viola, for having the courage to research and write this book.

to those who find fault...

Ive come across a lot of people that like to argue against this book, but havent really read it. Theyre just basing their argument on what someone else has said... that probably hasnt read it! Explaining the principles of this book to fellow believers, even to those who are friendly to gathering outside a traditional setting, is never usually embraced with open arms. The truth of this book is so sharp, it will divide the soul and spirit (not a painless process). As humans, we are programmed to fight or flight when our lives are in danger, but as Christians, we are called to be living sacrifices. Something has to die, and for our lives in Christ to be fruitful, it always has to be our picture. I think one of the main reasons people nearly get offended by this book is because they prefer their picture to Gods reality.

Bottom line: If you dont agree with this book, you havent really read it.
If you did read it, and feel like your "picture" is threatened, it did its job.

Pagans did good things too

Even if there are some parallels or similarities between the church now and some things that pagans did, that doesnt mean that all things we do that are not recorded in the Bible are bad or un-Christlike. One thing many forget and or deny is that we have a freedom in Christ that many other religions do not enjoy. Outright sin and evil are never to be part of a church service, or of private Christian life, but being innovative and using some things in modern society to reach out to the lost is not necessarily a sin. For instance, if a church wants to reach out to rebellious, rocker youth, it may be prudent to put some hymns to rock music, and spice up the service to show the kids that it is possible to be a Christian, and still have fun. I personally do not know of any church that practices communism, but that is exactly what believers did in the early church, at least for a while. The term "New Testament church" is highly subject to personal interpretation. Some so called New Testament churches "practice" speaking in tongues, but in reality, they probably are not doing what was done in the first century. I do not honestly believe that God wants us to pattern modern churches after the New Testament church, in any regard but strong doctrine. The early church didnt have tools like DVD players, cars and airplanes, and as such had to do things differently. Yes we worship on Sunday, but the word Sabbath simply means seventh, so any one day out of seven is valid to worship on. Some get dressed up for church, while others go in jeans, it matters not. The author is definitely biased and is tying to impart his particular sectarian beliefs on the rest of us, and while he has the right to try, you have the right to say no. I go to church, I sing hymns, I worship God and fellowship with other believers and I take of the cup and the bread. I also study the word of God with other believers, something that the early church didnt always do, simply because at that time, the New Testament was not yet finished. So, am I pagan for that? Yes, we celebrate Christmas, and we understand that some of the symbols in it and in Easter borrow from paganism, but it has a decidedly Jesus tone now, and belongs to us. Read this book if you desire, but dont condemn fellow believers based on its stilted viewpoints.

A Must Read for Truth Seekers!

While searching to understand the failing condition of America, a notice concerning Pagan Christianity popped up in my email inbox. I began to investigate. After listening to an interview with the authors, God confirmed in my spirit that I should read their book and I did. Then I ordered more than ten copies for my friends including the top five books Frank personally recommended. God is asking the church to reexamine its operational presuppositions! Will you study these issues? I am!

Frank Violas and George Barnas efforts reflect real courage. Give honor to whom honor is due! Before reading this work one must ask himself: Does my love for the Truth end where my flesh desires to protect my religion? God is clearly behind their work!

In collaboration with the Director of Church Education And Reform, weve concluded that the material presented in this book needs to be personally studied and acted upon.

If you have attempted to read through books like the series David Wells wrote (No Place for Truth, God in the Wasteland, Losing Our Virtue, and Above All Earthly Powrs), but found them cumbersome and difficult, a shorter and easier-to-read option is Gary Gilleys two works This Little Church Went to Market and This Little Church Stayed Home. The second of these two is what this reviewer has recently completed. Gilley has subtitled this book, A Faithful Church In Deceptive Times. Good choice. Let me say at the outset that both books should be read. They will open your eyes. While not as in-depth and thorough as the work Wells has done, the audience Gilley will speak most effectively to is the average lay person, not the scholar or professional minister who is more the target of Wells. That being said, many pastors who have been caught up in "fad Christianity" would benefit from This Little Church Stayed Home.

This Little Church has four sections dividing up fifteen chapters. Section 1 (chapters 1-5) explains postmodernism and how this philosophical outlook has impacted the churchs view on propositional truth. Section II (chapters 6-8) deals with the churchs responsibility to build up the body of Christ, giving attention to biblical church growth. Section III (chapters 9-11) has to do with the Bible, specifically, and how that is currently being misused and misinterpreted by some in order to push their distorted concepts of the gospel. Section IV (chapters 12-15) explains current challenges to the church: mysticism and the Emergent Church. There is more to these chapters than I have touched on, but these descriptions are only broad summaries.

Not enough good things could be said about This Little Church. Gilley takes on the dangers of the current fad of mysticism sweeping through the church, and calls the Emergent Church movement what it is: false teaching. Most commendable is his absence of fear in naming some of the biggest names in evangelicalism (and some not so big) in an effort to warn the church of heretical teaching. Some examples include Robert Schuller (p. 74), a poster boy for false teaching, Rick Warren (pp. 89-100), Dallas Willard and Richard Foster (p. 117), Karen Mains, wife of radio teacher, David Mains (pp. 137-38), David Seamand, who has appeared on Focus on the Family with James Dobson (pp. 138-39), Greg Boyd (p. 139), and George Barna (pp. 174-78). Other names are mentioned as well, but are not as readily recognizable. I wish there were more Christian leaders like Gilley who had the backbone to say what needs to be said and point out who specifically has strayed away from orthodoxy. Leaders are so often afraid to do this for fear of being accused of being judgmental, that they cower away from carrying out their God-given responsibility. Examples of this in Scripture include 1 Timothy 1:20, 3 John 9, and 2 Timothy 2:17, where Paul compares the influence of Hymenaeus and Philetus to the spreading of gangrene.

An example of his straightforward style is found in this quote: "Celebration of Discipline alone, not even referencing Richard Fosters other writings and teachings and ministries, is a virtual encyclopedia of theological error. We would be hard pressed to find in one so-called evangelical volume such a composite of false teaching" (p. 119). Bold and accurate! Other examples are found when he confronts Rick Warrens The Purpose-Driven Church and The Purpose-Driven Life: "Both, for instance, offer some good sound advice, helpful biblical insight and practical suggestions---and both are riddled with errors throughout" (p. 89) "In Warrens gospel presentations no mention is made of sin, repentance or even the Cross" (p. 90) "I found forty-two biblical inaccuracies, eighteen out-of-context passages of Scripture, supposedly used to prove his point, and another nine distorted translations" (p. 91). In the chapter in which these quotes are found, Gilley has a subsection entitled "Torturing Scripture," where he lists ten specific examples where Warren has clearly misrepresented the Bible.

This is a great read for any Christian who wants to understand some of the modern winds currently blowing through the church. Great background to current winds blowing in Bible claiming churches

I found this book an excellent source of background information and whats-in-the-head of the younger church goers. I have read a number of books promoting the post modern mindset and was looking for something which gave the other side of the picture using the Bible as a source of direction and worldview.

This book is very good at that pointing out that the integrity of the church and the gospel delivered must remain true to the Bible or otherwise become the fabrication of mere men. Giving women and men "what they think they need in hope of giving them what they really need" is touched on from several angles by this book. Experience as the measure and substance of truth is discussed as to the mindset of some persons today who are in or looking for a church home. "what does it mean to me" many persons ask rather than looking to an objective standard that rises above the cultural winds of today. The book covers a lot of aspects of the baby busters "who do not want to be lectured they expect to be entertained". The book will lead the reader to the conclusion that post modernism applied to religous doctrine (various mutually exclusive subjective assertions) are contradictory and irrational. One can read the book and think that at some point a future generation may well dismiss much that is religous for this point alone.

Market research is discussed showing how this approach to head counting and budget success is flawed and that the true issue is sin, "not felt needs". A good number of points are made about the adaptation of marketing ideas being the souce of church growth experts and their ardent followers. A great point is made by the author in that who we listen to and follow is who we want to please. The conclusion of a Bible student working through the scriptures and this book would easily be that unless we are for him we are against him. I know of no church growth expert that has suffered the hardships or loss of life for the church as did the apostles and Jesus himself. Loyalties should go the the most deserving or the most educated?

Another good discussion in the book is the idea that the church(s) have "drunk from the well of secular psychology for decades....." and this has influenced the message and attendant communication in a negative self destructive way.

It is a good discussion of the irrational drive to the conclusion that if nobody is right then everybody is right.

My conclusion is that the author was thinking along the lines of the ancient Bible hero Joshua who said that If Jehovah be God then follow him.

Must read for all Christians

I cant say enough good things about this book in the light of the major failures of New Evangelicalism in 2007--from the defection to Romanism of the President of the ETS to Ted Haggard and Richard Roberts and the Grassley investigation. The exchanged gospel has its consequences, and were only beginning to see the cracks last year. Gilley ably traces the false gospel thats penetrated the Evangelical world and turned it on its head, and he does so with a pastors heart. You can sense that hes upset to see that wolf among the sheep, just as the Lord was when He saw the multitudes as sheep without a shepherd--or worse.

Having said that, I see two shortcomings in the book:

1. Although intended to be a portrayal of the positive, of the church that didnt go to market but stayed home, the book seems to have wandered back to the market perspective of Gilleys earlier work. Other than the well-flogged quote fr that Liberal Kirsopp Lake (p. 14), he doesnt really list the names of the obedient churches. D.A. Carson is cast in good light (and deservedly so for his stand against mysticism and pluralism), but Gilley needs to pay more attention to leaders n seminaries that do take a "stayed home" stance in the midst of rampant compromise. Its a pity he wound up using the book as an excuse to extend his tirade against the "went to markets" although thats an important theme, too. Maybe he could write a third book on what was missed!

2. Gilleys attack on Dynamic Equivalence lacks the kind of evidence that he produces for the other points in the book. Yes, Rick Warrens Purpose Driven Life and many pastors rip verses out of context to bolster their theses. No question of that. But thats totally different fr how DE is usually parodied. Fact is, the Scriptures themselves exhibit DE rather than Formal Equivalence (FE) with startling regularity, which shouldnt be startling if one acknowledges that languages map differently (in terms of syntax, semantics, semiotics--i.e. word order, vocab n meanings, significance of certain expressions in society) from one another. That so, good translations should bear but happenstance correlation in form to the original text. In other words, a sentence in Chinese, for instance, Duolonduo juowan fashenle dianduan (lit. "Toronto previousnight happen electricchop") wld sound better in English using DE than Formal Equivalence: "There was a black-out in Toronto last night." So in many passages where the NT quotes the OT, or the LXX does so, the Greek bears scant resemblance to the Hebrew, but Christ ( e.g. in Luke 4) and the Apostles regarded DE translations as "the Scripture" no less. Interestingly, that was also Luther n the Authorized Versions translators position, as seen in his Open Letter and their 1611 Preface, respectively.

Case in point: in Gilleys comparison of four versions on p. 85, the FEs "you are not in the flesh" communicates images that are alien to the original text, e.g. Roman Christians were disembodied spirits, or had a dualist hatred for their bodies, or were not yet swallowed by wild animals in the Colosseum. What Paul means, using the Greek form (sarx) that he chose under inspiration, has nothing to do with animal meat but has to do with the sinful nature. Nor does he mean by "in" ones physical location but ones being controlled--by that sinful nature. So comparing the KJV and NASB vs LB and the Message, the latter pair (DEs) actually come out being more accurate and faithful to the meaning of what Paul and the Holy Spirit wanted to communicate, had they spoken in English.

Despite my protests above, Gilley should be congratulated for taking a strong stand against the knock-off gospels out there. Better yet, save those congratulations and pass your copy of the book to your key contacts and pray for some much-needed Holy Spirit conviction and repentance.

Worth the read - if you care about whats happening.

Gary Gilleys treatment of difficult issues within evangelicalism is both objective and well documented. Gary means no harm when he points to the critical issues we are facing and the path we are taking which meanders further from the scriptures all the time. Gilley is equally occupied with providing constructive biblical answers. A good read for both pastors and believers in general.

Good background, Poor Solution

Since we have been Christians for many years, both my wife and I have been distressed over the "Show Time" type of Christianity that now exists in many churches. We have attended services in a church which has "Broadway Style" (words taken from the church bulletin) presentations. One Christmas, this same church had a "Rock around the Christmas Tree" presentation (including the music, tree, and dancing).

I bought MacArthurs book with the hope that it would provide us with some insights and solutions to this problem of worldliness in the church. The first seven chapters give good insight into the pragmatic, "market-driven" church so common in our day. They are worthwhile reading.

The problem I had with his book comes in chapter eight. Im expecting some insight into the root of this problem. However, the only answer I get is, "The very reason many contemporary churches embrace pragmatic methodology is they lack understanding of Gods sovereignty in the salvation of the elect." He spends a whole chapter discussing his Calvinistic view.

The classic statement he makes is, ". . . those who reject the biblical doctrine of sovereignty. . ." It isnt a question of rejecting sovereignty (Who in their right mind would doubt that the God of the Bible is sovereign in all that He does?). There are many godly Christians, missionaries, and churches who believe that God in his sovereignty has given to man the power of genuine choice. Giving man choice does not take away from Gods glory or sovereignty.

His solution, it seems, is that "many contemporary churches" should get more "understanding of Gods sovereignty in the salvation of the elect." He seems to say that accepting his Calvinistic belief regarding "salvation of the elect" would solve the problem of pragmatism in todays churches. If he means to say that, how does one account for worldliness in strongly Calvinistic churches? Frankly, I dont think that worldliness (or un-worldliness) in a church is determined by the churches view on Calvinism. The eighth chapter left me disappointed otherwise, it is a very good book.

I find this to be one of MacArthurs more compelling book. His awareness of the threats to the pure gospel is sharp his use of Scripture to expose the dangers is on target his exegesis is truly admirable the relevancy of this book speaks volume.

I told a pastor friend of mine that he MUST read this book. Everyone who is in ministry or getting ready to answer Gods call to ministry ought to read this book. It will safeguard you from a lot of dangers that lurk, wearing the robe of evangelicalism or falsely so-called.

I especiall like the last few chapters that emphasize the sovereignty of God in salvation and the building of his church. The church belongs to the Lord. He purchased it with his own blood. He is its rightful head. He knows how to build it and what it should look like. He has commissioned us to preach the pure gospel. Thank Lord, for the likes of Spurgeon and MacArthur.

The brilliance of John MacArthurs book, "Ashamed of the Gospel" is that it was written long before Rick Warren and Bill Hybels were household names. MacArthur, like Spurgeon a century ago, is one of our generations leading apologist for defending the faith and the intregrity of biblical doctrines.

The evangelical church that I knew (until about 1995) was a place where the gospel was upheld and the bible was looked at as the infallible, inspired Word of God. This evangelical church largely arose because of the apostasy that invaded the mainline denominations some 80-100 years ago. Now that same apostasy has invaded Evangelicalism and the term "evangelical" no longer has any firm meaning in my mind.

Blame it on many factors. One key factor are pastors who figured out they could obtain larger churches, prominence, and prestige by preaching a "partial Christianity" that contains bits and pieces of the truth, and downplays or ignores the other doctrines that dont appeal to the masses. Rick Warren is especially dangerous as he surveyed his potential audience to discover what they wanted preached. Of course, that model works in todays consumer mentality. Rick has placed mans needs above Gods words.

Another blame is on people themselves. They dont want to hear truth and the marketplace has rewarded pastors who placate peoples needs to be "churched" but not taught anything controversial or difficult to believe. Mixed together, heathen pagans plus limp-willed pastors and you get a pretty good understanding of what evangelicalism has become.

God will never be denied a witness in any generation and John MacArthur is one of a diminishing number of sound bible teachers today who dares to take an unpopular and difficult stand when communicating Gods message.

Especially powerful in this book was beginning on page 121 and Pauls exposition of the gospel in the Book of Romans. Pauls approach to the gospel begins with the bad news of mans sin and Gods wrath. It is hard to appreciate the good news of the gospel unless one fully understands just how wicked and needing of a savior we are. The seeker-sensitive movement always ignores this point and immediately jumps to the good news. Consequently we have many people in todays seeker-sensitive church who are getting "saved", but they have no idea from what.

Another chapter of note is Chapter 7 on Paul preaching on Mars Hill in Acts Ch. 17. MacArthur makes the case that many church leaders read more into the text about pragmatism than is there. Paul did not compromise his message while preaching in the open marketplace of the day todays preachers are compromising right and left. Paul was direct he didnt win many converts. Look at the seeker-sensitive movement today attracting millions. One thing we know about biblical truth is that if the masses are running to some book or teaching, be cautious. That is a flashing warning sign that deception is nearby.

I cant wait to read MacArthurs new book, "The Truth War."

I was looking for books that would explain some of the criticisms aimed at CGM churches, such as Willow Creek and Saddleback. This book, published in 1993 doesnt name either of these by name and I thought it would give a relatively objective view having been written earlier than most others of this type.

MacArther takes aim at CGM churches and may be one of the first authors to do so. Of special interest to me is the appendix that gives some insight into Charles Spurgeon and the Downgrade Controversy. This is probably the best part of the entire book, and takes up a substantial portion of it. This is a good commentary and brief biographical treatment of Spurgeon for those of us who are not very familiar with him but only through some very good quotations.

However, MacArthers treatment of CGM churches begins to wear thin about midway through the second chapter. Some of his arguments start to make him sound more like a pharisee than someone bringing in the light. He objects to the forms of worship, the subject of worship, the absence of substance, the user-friendly message, the seeker-friendly concept...and these are all well and fine, but most of these arguments can be found for free all over the internet. He seems to go on a bit long in order to flesh out chapters that could be shorter, but of course this is sort of par for the course with most preachers!

MacArther makes his point but as a champion of institutional churchianity, he must draw up short of pointing out that these megachurches are merely the next logical steps for an institution where the clergy is always more exhalted, more revered and more siognificant than the laity "sheep." So while the reader may be freed from a downgraded institution, the person will still be in bondage to MacArthers brand of institution which puts them in a pew, staring at the back of the heads of others and viewing things going on at the front. As long as the preacher and the Sunday preaching remain the staple diet of people who call themselves Christians, it will continue to be a movement that is in decline, no matter the size or flavor.

My church went through the 40 day course a couple of years ago, briefing Warrens book it appeared that there was not much to be concerned with. This book brings some of those concerns to light. I read some of the reviews here and it is apparent that people cannot be objective. You either love the book because you dont like Rick Warrens purpose or you hate the book because you love his purpose. Rich Warrens effect on the church is very disturbing, but I am not going to be in the camp of claiming he is the Anti-Christ or false profit either. The greater issue is that we have a Christian community as a whole, that is very undiscerning and seems to think that financial success is Godly success. As Christians we need to seek out the truth. We need to understand how scripture is given to us, we cant make ill-informed statements like the KJV is the "authorized" version. In the same breathe we need to understand that the Message paraphrase is not a Bible version and to quote it, like Warren does many times is foolish.
Back to the book, I liked some of the points that Sundquist points out, some of them are fairly obvious but I felt it was poorly written. I look forward to getting a copy of Bob Dewaays book as he seems to be more of a Berean than some of the other Warren alertists are.

Reading this superb book by James Sundquist will unlock the gate to understanding the purpose driven church movement ongoing by Rick Warren. It is exquisitely written, thorough, clear and concise. He walks you through the purpose driven life chapter by chapter and relates very well how it is biblically inaccurate and obscures the gospel. If you dont understand what is wrong with your church or our churches in general this book is for you. If you do understand what the purpose driven church movement is all about, this book will enhance your understanding. I cannot recommend James Sundquist book, Whos Driving the Purpose Driven Church? to you highly enough.

This is the first time Ive given a book the minimum rating.

I bought this book in the hope that it would help me consider whether the Purpose-Driven Life/Church is more secular philosophy influencing church beliefs than the church bringing Gods revelation to the world. However, it quickly became apparent that the basis of this book is fundamentally flawed, as the author gets many basic facts wrong.

The problems can best be illustrated by looking at Appendix A, where the author contrasts Psychology with the Bible. Ill describe the errors as they apply to Jungian psychology, as this is one of the main targets for the author in the book and is something of which I have some knowledge.

Example Errors

(1) Fear of the Lord
Point 1 of the appendix says psychology "counsels no fear of the Lord at anytime.." with the Bible teaching that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Yet Carl Jung wrote: "It is quite right, therefore, that the fear of God should be considered the beginning of all wisdom... Both are justified, the fear of God as well as the love of God" (Completed Works Volume 11, p419).

(2) Jung and atheism
Point 2 of the appendix says "Most founding fathers were atheists or humanists... including.. Jung" In fact, Carl Jung famously asserted his absolute knowledge of Gods existence in a BBC documentary made shortly before he died. The atheist Richard Dawkins described Jung as believing in a "100% probability of God" (The God Delusion, p50).

(3) Body, Mind, Soul, Personality... and Spirit
Point 3 of the Appendix declares that psychology does not acknowledge the spirit in man. Yet Carl Jungs writings are packed with discussion of the spirit. Just in case you think that by spirit he really meant mind, Jung wrote: "Spirit, like God... cannot be proved to exist in the external world and cannot be understood rationally" (CW 8, p 329). This clearly distinguishes spirit from mind/body/personality, all of which can be studied scientifically/rationally.

(4) Eternal Hope
Point 4 of the appendix contrasts psychology, as offering no hope for eternity, with the Bible that teaches us about our eternal destiny. But Jungs view was that "eternity..is the prerogative of the One God". (CW11, p493).

(5) The Holy Spirit
Point 5 of the appendix declares "Psychology doesnt even believe in the Holy Spirit". In contrast, Jung wrote: "the Paraclete ie: Holy Spirit is of the greatest significance" (CW11, p433), and "Since the Holy Ghost is the Third Person of the Trinity and God is present entire in each of the three Persons at any time, the indwelling of the Holy Ghost means nothing less than an approximation of the believer to the status of Gods son." (CW11, p413).

The author goes on to make 35 points of comparison between Psychology and Scripture, and in regards Jungian Psychology I take issue with most of them. Please dont misunderstand me: Im not saying that Jungs views should be taken uncritically by any means, he says many things that are highly controversial. But this book is based on straw man arguments.

The spirit in which it is written

I felt very uncomfortable with the tone taken in the book towards Rick Warren. His name is used several times on most pages, when making points of criticism, giving it the feel of a sustained, personal attack. He is often placed in double-binds (eg: he is criticised for saying that Willow Creek back his programmes, because it is not the Lords backing!).

Rick Warren is also labelled early on in the book as a heretic, which is a very serious charge. But he is then criticised for statements such as "meditation is focused thinking" and "your personal testimony is more effective than a sermon" and "faithfulness has always been a rare quality".

Are these really matters of fundamental heresy to which 1 Timothy 4 might be relevant? They seem to me to be merely disputable matters that fall into the province of Romans 14.

Conclusion

The Purpose-Driven approach has pervaded the church so much that I think there is a need for a book like this to question and challenge what is happening. Unfortunately, whilst this book may contain fine-sounding argument, it does not contain sound argument, because of the many elementary factual mistakes.

This book is an over-the-top attack on Rick Warren. It seems Warrens success, both in terms of earthly recognition and spiritual fruit, is too much for Sundquist. The arguments are overblown and not based on reason. It seems he was out to do a smear attack on Warren from the start, and his agenda drives the "facts" he uncovers.

I am not Warrens #1 fan, but let me say this: If I ever have 1% of the effectiveness that Rick Warren has had for the kingdom of God, I will be thrilled. Let me also say that Rick Warren "reverse tithes"--that is, he GIVES 90% of his income, and LIVES on 10%. And, once his "Purpose Driven Life" book became such a bestseller, Warren actually gave all the salary hed earned in 20-plus years back to his church. Thats an example I cant argue with. Leave Rick Warren alone and get your own purpose, Mr. Sundquist!

I am not really sure who James Sundquist is. I have read his writings on Warren, and find them to be off base in several key areas. Some of his statements are plainly false. I had occasion to question Sundquist via email on his false statements, but only received a veiled threat to drag my name through the mud.

This book is a great example of Evangelical Christianitys bad side. An entire book based on exposing another ministrys faults is sad.

Ive read the book a few times and bought additional copies for several friends. The books offers biblical facts showing where the modern day churches are back sliding. He does a great job showing how churches like Willow Creek and Saddleback water down the gospel and present the gospel incorrectly.

The book was a huge help to me in exposing the false teachings in a church that I used to attend. It also helped me choose a new church that is Biblically relevent.

While not the primary purpose of the book, theres a section at the end of the book that is the best Ive ever read discussing repentence.

Well this book DECEIVED ON PURPOSE certainly NAILED it down for me WHAT was bothering me.... it is so stubtle, yet with SCHULLER, and Seigal, two PROMINENT NEW AGERS, I was amazed that MORE have not tossed out their books by Rick Warren!!!

I read this book right on the heals of reading "The Truth War" by John MacArthur. While MacArthur deals with apostasy and the battle for truth in a historical and general sense, Smith provides a concrete example of how the truth is being warped to accommodate New Age philosophies in the postmodern/emergent movement. I am serving on a Pastor Search Committee dealing with the aftermath of a failed attempt to implement Rick Warrens PDC concepts in our church. "Deceived on Purpose" has provided valuable insight to me as I study the Bible to discern true doctrine from the subtleties of these false teachings. Coming from a New Ager turned Christian, the author has a unique insight into how dangerous the Purpose Driven movement really is.

Early Christian doctrines were forged in the crucible of Greek philosophical thought. Although grounded in the Bible, Christian theology has always sought to express itself in the intellectual language of its day. Fundamentalists may oppose this tendency, but others regard it as essential to express Christian truth in a manner that is intelligible to people in changing times and places. Indeed, this process of interperetation is found even in the Bible itself, as when Paul takes the Christian message to the Greeks.

The late Fr. Bede Griffiths was a British Roman Catholic monk who lived for many years in a small "ashram" (hermitage/monastery) in India, and who was deeply influenced by the religion of India as expressed in the foundational writings of the Vedas, the Upanishads, and the Bhagasvad Gita, as well as the Vedantist writings that gave philosophical expression to those religious ideas. Far from being a New Age dabbler, Fr. Griffiths internalized these teachings and lived them on a daily basis, adopting the garb and lifestyle of an Indian "sanyassin" even as he remained true to his Catholicism.

Well, MOSTLY true, for there are some areas in which Fr. Griffiths orthodoxy will seem a bit shaky to traditionalists, as when he seems to deny the traditional Catholic understanding of the Incarnation of Jesus. (Despite this, Fr. Griffiths was never - to my knowledge - publicly criticized or censured by the Catholic hierarchy. Perhaps this is because Griffiths was a saintly man, not an agitator or egomaniacal rabble-rouser.)

Griffiths thus applies his understanding of Indian thought to traditional Catholic teachings, finding both commonalities and points of divergence. Unlike many New Age thinkers, he does not say that all religions are the same or make glib generalizations of equality where real differences exist.

Griffiths also takes note of various trends in modern science and physics to see what bearing they have on religion and the philosophy of religion. His thinking here is perhaps less original, relying largely upon observations from others who are more trained in the hard sciences.

I believe that Fr. Griffiths is on to something, that the marriage of Christianity and Vedanta presents exciting and fruitful possibilities for a revival of Christian theology, philosophy, and monasticism. This is not crass syncretism, but thoughtful, organic development. I hope that Fr. Griffiths influence continues to grow, both among his fellow Benedictines and in the church as a whole.

Science is following down the mystical path and finding "God" in the equations of advance quantum physics and string theory. Einsteins statement that "God does not play with dice" was more than even he had thought. As modern Christian thought becomes more scientific with biblical archeology and early Christian history, advanced science is becoming more spiritually mystical.

An intreging and most readable book. Especially when you enjoy coming out of a reading experience with more questions than answers.

Simply put, this is the single most helpful volume Ive yet run across for participating in "the fellowship of the Godhead," the God-given gift known variously as contemplative or centering prayer. I revisit it again and again in my personal practice, and would recommend that others do the same. John 17 and 1 John 1 come alive in this "wayless way" that Bourgeault suggests. Check it out!

I enjoyed this book very much. The author, Cynthia Borgeault - an Episcopalian priest, reviews aspects of centering prayer, a Christian contemplative practice evolved from Christian monastic practices of the first few centuries A.D. by Fr. Thomas Keating and his monastic colleagues. Fr. Keating is a leader in this form of spirituality and is the author of many of the books related to the practice. Borgeault studied with Fr. Keating, but her "take" on centering prayer is a bit different than Keatings and it provides useful contrast and food for thought... Give it a try, you might like it.

It is my guess that people who are looking at this title are already familiar with Trappist priest Thomas Keating and his championing of centering prayer. It is also likely that people who are familiar with Keating may know something about the controversy that surrounds the man and his technique of centering prayer. Perusing some of the criticisms of his book "Open Mind, Open Heart" by some Amazon readers will highlight both the admiration many have of this man, as well as some of the controversy. While some of the objections to centering prayer have merit if centering prayer becomes just another form of meditation, this is not due to Keatings writings as much as a misreading of his works or a misunderstanding of his intentions.

In this work, Keating sets out to further explain the technique of centering prayer. While he does use some psychology in this work, it does so not contain the heavy psychological point of view that some of his other writings contain (at least not in the detail), nor does he focus too heavily on non-Christian traditions of meditation. Instead he discusses centering prayer and roots in the Christian tradition. He also offers personal reasons why this technique is so important for him, namely that he saw many people who are Christians traveling to other parts of the world searching for something that is an important part of Catholic monasticism. The book was published in the 1990s, after years of trial and error concerning the centering prayer, as well as his success at leading workshops that introduced many people to those form of prayer, and the book contains many anecdotes he learned along the way.

Keating clearly sees the importance of centering prayer as a way of connecting with God, and entering into the presence of God. While he views it as a solitary activity by its nature, he strongly suggests that people who participate in centering prayer be part of a larger faith community, and if possible a centering prayer group. He espouses spiritual direction. The book also espouses what he calls "Divine Therapy" where hurts that are deep within us can be surfaced and healed in a spiritual manner, though he is also careful to state that this is not a replacement of psychological therapy.

This book compliments Keatings other writings and can help the reader come to a deeper understanding of centering prayer and the part it can play in a Christian spirituality.

INTIMACY WITH GOD by Father Thomas Keating is one of the best books I have ever read about prayer. First and foremost Father Keatings book provided me with a safe haven to feel issues that I have felt since I was an orphan as a young boy. This book gave me affirmation and insight to my feelings about not only who God is but what it means to have a personal relationship with God in a hectic world. As I read this book the little boy in me felt Gods loving arms and presence surround me and I felt an inner peace and excitement in what I was reading. As a Protestant Pastor I would strongly recommend this book by Father Keating to anyone who I may meet for a brother in Christ has written a very sensitive, loving book. If one desires to have a more intimate realtionship with God and not the world then read this book. The worse thing that may happen is you may stop and think about your priorities. By the end of the book you may also be thinking about what has been missing in my life that I need? The best thing is you may feel Gods loving arms and presence in your life as you read and reflect. Reflect on where is God in my life? Maybe its time to take the step and find out! God be with you.

I was one of those kids who was forced to go to church every Sunday morning whether I wanted to or not. So Id sit in the pew, kneel, read, listen, etc... for the hour that I had to and then rejoice when I was finally able to leave that place. For me there was no meaning to what I was doing. This book actually brings spirituality to the Catholic Church, something Ive long thought impossible.

Father Keating, who is one of the most spiritual people Ive had the pleasure of meeting, examines the early Christian practices of Contemplative Meditation and how it can help us become connected to God once again. His research goes back to books from the first millenium of the very early Christians, as well as relies on some of the declarations made by the Second Vatican Council.

The similiarities to meditiations practiced in some of the eastern religions is pretty remarkable and these are pointed out. I have some experience with meditating and it struck me as very similiar to Mindful Meditation but there a distinct difference in that there is intent with Contemplative Meditation.

This is another excellent book from Father Thomas Keating and signifies a solid introduction to the theory and practice of Centering Prayer. I encourage anyone who has immersed themselves in any of the wonderful eastern meditational practices, but who have always longed for something similar in a Christian context, to pick this book up and give Centering Prayer a try. This recommendation, though, should in no way dissuade those whose interest and path have been exclusively Christian. For the practice of Centering Prayer, as Father Keating so aptly explains in this wonderful book, is Christian through and through. What impresses me so much about the whole Centering Prayer movement, if one can describe it as such, is that this is not sugarcoated, watered-down, or pie-in-the-sky fluff. Keatings explorations concerning the unconscious and his paradigm of Centering Prayer as Divine Therapy are critical to an understanding of our spiritual and worldly proclivities. How many of us have pondered, along with St. Paul in one of his epistles, why we continue to do those things we wish we didnt, and why we find it so difficult at times to do the things we know we should? Father Keatings expert melding of spiritual and psychological wisdom has updated a centuries-old practice to appeal to our modern era. I owe Father Keating a debt of gratitude for his excellent writings and his tireless work on behalf of Contemplative Outreach. I sincerely hope that you get as much from reading his works as I have.

Many of the articles in this text were published originally in the Christmas 1996 issue of the Sewanee Theological Review. If anyone asked me about Centering Prayer I always suggested they obtain a copy of this journal -- a popular issue which has long since sold out. I was very dismayed that these rich and helpful articles wouldnt be widely accessible for new practitioners of Centering Prayer. I was thrilled when I learned (from a visit to the Amazon.Com website) that these resources were now available in book form together with a few exceptional additions. This book is an ecumenical venture and is a wonderful starting place for a person who is interested in embarking on this form of prayer and spirituality. This book is simply a MUST for anyone who practices Centering Prayer or wants to learn more. The essays in this volume explore the different dimensions of Centering Prayer: historical, anecdotal, sacramental, practical (how to pray) and place this prayer form in the context of Community and Ministry. If you buy any book on Centering Prayer, this volume should be at the top of your list.

Centering Prayer in Daily Life and Ministry is a collection of short essays on aspects and practices related to Centering Prayer, a way of Christian praying and being developed by Trappist monks. Centering Prayer seeks to focus the "attention and intention" of the person praying, gradually training the pray-er to be fully present to God and fully aware of every motivation for actions. The practice itself is simple--engaging in a time of silence focused upon a word (e.g., Jesus, peace, Holy Spirit, holy, etc.) while gently directing straying thoughts back to the word and the awareness of Gods presence. Centering Prayer is designed to be practiced for about 20 minutes twice a day. Other books were published long ago that focus on the fundamental practice of Centering Prayer.
This book offers reflections by a diverse group of practitioners of Centering Prayer on important subjects related to the practice. Centering Prayer was designed as a distillation of the ancient contemplative tradition, and one essay explores the ways in which Centering Prayer draws on the contemplatives. Lectio divina is a way of reading scripture in Gods presence, slowly, listening to Gods voice in the text. Walking the Labyrinth has become an important meditative prayer practice to many people in recent years. There are articles in the collection related to the connection of Centering Prayer to these and other practices.
Several articles also deal with the relation of Centering Prayer to ministerial practice. These include articles on Centering Prayer and Pastoral Care, Systems Theory, and Priestly Spiritual Formation.
As a newcomer to Centering Prayer, I had to read the brief description of Centering Prayer in the appendix first to have a good feel of what the authors were describing. The book is clearly a newer development in existing conversation with established vocabulary. It did not take much effort for a new comer to join the conversation and get up to speed, though. I do plan to read some of the older literature on Centering Prayer later and reread this book afterwards.
The book does a tremendous job of communicating the feel of the practice, and defines as much what Centering Prayer is not as it describes what it is. This is important, because this is a practice that makes disciples who are different in all of their being and doing. It is not a spiritualized meditative technique for stress relief. I suppose the best recommendation I can give for the book is that I intend to begin the practice immediately and see how it helps me grow as a disciple. The book let me feel that the practice is in exhaustible yet completely accessible.

As a Thich Nhat Hanh fan, (tough to say!), this item is a nice addition to my collection of print and audio. For those of you who are tempted to download the audio, be aware that it comes from an Amazon partner, ... I have been listening to this tape for years, not as a guided meditation, but more as a reminder of strong, important, simple ideas that are easy to forget.

Thich Nhat Hanh has published many books and tapes. This audio CD stands out because in its several hours it covers all the major bases of Zen thinking and practice. When you have listened to it you will have all you need to begin a meditation practice, to understand some basics of Zen or EuroAmerican Buddhism, or advance your existing meditation practice.

The CD includes comments on the importance of being fully present in the moment. ("Present moment, wonderful moment") It goes on to teach a basic but very useful guided meditation, with explanations of each step, so that it is easy to learn and understand. For example, one part has you saying to yourself silently on your in-breath, "breathing in I am aware of a tree," and on the out-breath, "breathing out, I smile to the tree." The words alone dont sound like much, but after hearing the comments, it becomes powerful. The author explains that the tree can be a symbol for all the resouces that are outside my body, that are readily available for me. If there is a tree, he says, there have to be sun, rain, and earth, for example, or else there would be no tree. This thought can be calming as we encounter daily anxieties and sometimes feel that we are not getting enough of what we need: we can look on a tree and remember that the earth has all we need that is important. Enough food, enough air, etc. Breathing in I am aware of a tree, breathing out I smile to the tree.

He also uses this idea to advance the ideas of interbeing and impermanence, but Ill let you find out about those when hearing the CD!

I have downloaded audio books by Thich Nhat Hanh in which the sound quality has not been nearly as good as it is on this 2-disc set. If you are not familiar with this Vietnamese monk and are exploring mindfulness training and insight meditation, or just want to learn how to make your days on the planet a more joyful, peaceful experience, this is a great investment. If you are a follower, you will love The Art Of Mindful Living. It contains some of his most core teachings, and there are some beautiful chants included as well. Wonderful opportunities for mindful, contemplative time.

The Audio CD/Tape is a "Lecture," Not the Book Text

Ive listened to a few other nonfiction "books on tape" that pull this odd lecture and/or interview in the place of the book text while claiming to cover the entire content of the book thing and it never measures up to the conciseness or clarity of the written word or, more accurately, the conciseness and clarity of someone reading the written word.

The other problem here is that English is not Thich Nhat Hanhs first language (probably not even his third or forth). So, on top of the lecture focus being bogged down with listening to Hanh guide a large group through meditation for the first (at least) forty minutes of this recording, his inability to articulate any of his incredibly basic Zen concepts through anything other than monosyllabic broken English becomes quite the opposite of Zen. Its quite maddening, in fact.

Besides the problems detailed above, the content covered is really too basic for anyone with even a cursory knowledge of Zen and/or Buddhism and those who are initiates will likely wonder what the heck is going on since theres little context given for anything, all of which it feels like were being dropped in the middle of.

I do not leave negative reviews it is not for me to bash anyones hard work and, for all I know, the written book is excellent. But Karmically speaking, I feel it is my duty to warn anyone considering buying the audio version so you know what to expect. Still, I humbly suggest avoiding it entirely.

I picked this book off my parents bookshelf because the title intrigued me. Little did I know that the way I looked at anger would change forever. I now understand that I do not have to be a victim of my emotions and that through the practice of mindfulness I can transform. I have recommended this book to friends and they have had the same experience. Thich Nhat Han has changed the way I look at everything!

Interesting Read

Its an interesting read. He delves briefly into Buddhist-oriented practice, "eating healthy food and drinking milk from happy cows" comes to mind. Whether or not that resonates with you, or makes you want to throw the book away, the actual lessons in the book are really something good. Its a very easy to read, quick primer on a working method to ending problems with anger issues.

The lessons repeat throughout the book, and essentially boil down to the Buddhist idea of mindfulness to pay attention to things, including yourself. If youre angry, stop what youre doing and figure out why. There is rarely anything more important than stopping when you find yourself angry. Practicing not being angry, over time, makes it much easier to not be angry, and so on.

As far as "easy to read", many self help books - heck, many books of many genres - seem to make the text more difficult, to make the author sound more important. This doesnt make that pretense, at all. It feels like an incredibly well written book report, written by the worlds most enlightened fifth grader. It makes for an easy conversant tone, and a quick read, and a quick re-read.

For some people, the lessons and stories in the book might be very obvious. For others out here, it helps to read it once. If youve had problems with anger, if you have two to four hours to read through this, and trying to improve yourself is worth $10 to you, this book is certainly worth a shot.

In a society where anger is "normal" this should be required reading. The author is one of the great spiritual teachers of our time and is very naturally a profound and compassionate psychologist. This is not about "getting it out". You learn to let those hot feelings cool so that you become less and less habituated to angry responses and discover more and more about self-control and, with that, essential self-respect. Strongly recommended even for people without obvious "anger problems". We all live in an angry world. We all need to understand these absolutely debilitating issues.

I picked this up after my anger started careening out of control, especially at work. This book was responsible for putting me back on the dharma path. Thich Naht Hanhs writings on Buddhism are incredibly lucid, and easy to apply to your daily life. Since discovering this book, Ive read four others by Thich Naht Hanh, and am currently working on a fifth. My life has been transformed since reading this book, but keep in mind that Ive also been meditating daily and meeting regularly with a sangha. Whether youre looking to "walk the path" or simply gain some control over your emotions, this book is an effective resource.

This author has a unique ability to boil down a concept to a simple easily understood recipe that most people can quickly grasp. He has written a Manual on Mindfulness meditation in a 148 page back pocket sized book. It contains picturesque examples and a choice of a variety of exercises that the reader can use to enjoy life in the moment and appreciate the interrelationship of all things.

Nhat Hanhs Mindfulness exercises teach us to become aware of the miracle of life. We do not think of things as being good or bad, we simply observe them as they are breathing, observing, appreciating, and letting thoughts pass. We practice and live our life in mindfulness of and the interrelationship to all things. When we eat a tangerine, for example, we do so thinking and enjoying exactly what we are doing in the moment. Our mind is not on what we will do when we are finished with the task at hand or day dreaming about something else. We feel the texture of the tangerine as we peel it. We note the spray and fragrance that the fruit releases during the process. We taste each juicy bite and enjoy the succulent fruit being thoroughly chewed and swallowed in the moment. We take the time to pause and think of the mother of the fruit, the tree and how the flowers and leafs are bathed by the sun and rain. We imagine the bees pollinating the flowery tree. We appreciate tree roots roll receiving and transmitting the earths nourishment and the rains moisture.

In addition to awakening us to what is, Hanh teaches us to liberate our hearts and minds from incorrect thinking and to have compassion for those not yet awakened to truth.

Thich Nhat Hanh wrote "The Miracle of Mindfulness" in 1974 to help the politically-neutral aid workers in Vietnam deal with the trauma of war and the challenges of their work. The book is a remarkable reminder of the power we have to be effective, and that power is rooted in our willingness to bring attention to exactly where we are.

What I really appreciate about this book is that it is about "Engaged Buddhism." In this school, awareness is not just something you gain sitting still in meditation. Rather Hahn emphasizes that awareness can also be gleaned and expressed when you get to work in your life!

If what you seek is practical enlightenment, I suggest you read any of Ariel and Shya Kanes books: Working on Yourself Doesnt Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation,How To Create a Magical Relationship,Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment. Like Hahn, the Kanes support their readers in gaining and utilizing awareness in a way that is clearly effective, both personally and globally!

This is a great book for anyone interested in meditation. Since mindfulness is at the core of meditation this book helps to explain not only what mindfulness is but how to put it into practice by making mindfulness part of ones daily life. A gem of a book. khudos to Thich Nhat Hanh.

While this is a great book for anyone interested in meditation, I highly recommend it to people in recovery from the effects of trauma.

The concept of mindfulness was first introduced to me in therapy, due to years of PTSD symptoms. This book was an enormous help and has aided in my healing. Thich Nhat Hahn teaches, through anecdotes, short stories and exercises, how to be self-aware and mentally present in day-to-day life. For anyone whos experienced severe trauma, you know that mental escape can be a more desirable way of living, especially when dealing with flashbacks & nightmares. Ive learned from this book how to live in the moment and also how to create a feeling of calm/relaxation even when I am triggered. I never thought it would be possible, but with practice, it is.

I agree with the previous reviewer: Dont miss the extra feature, which is a Thich Nhat Hanhs lecture at Berkeley. The philosophy is there the methodology is there the spirit is there the practice is there. You dont need too many "vehicles/rafts" to be happy and/or enlightened. And "the finger is not the moon". Thich Nhat Hanh is popular for his "deceptively simple" words. As in his many books, Thich Nhat Hanh deploys skillful means for us to apply into our daily life. Take the real message and you will get benefited. Dont forget to practice and relax though.

Great introductory film on Thick Nhat Hahns life. It will move those who have seen him teaching or read his books and hopefully it will inspire those who havent just yet. Here is a real master of compassion and engaged humanity but also a humble monk and meditator. The DVD offers a narrative about his life and work and a public speech both equally captivating.

This is a very well done portrait of Thich Nhat Hanh. The most important and engaging aspect of this production is that is conveys Thich Nhat Hanhs personality and soul. This is what I find to be the most transformational aspect of his Being. To bring this forth so beautifully, constitutes art.

While the documentary covers some highlights from the Vietnam period, the underlying message is really about finding peace in yourself and sharing this in your sphere of influence. Part of this message is that everything and everyone is interdependent, Thich Nhat Hanh refers to this as "interbeing." In other words, love and happiness by its very nature is intersubjective and individual happiness apart from others is an illusion.

The film also portrays Plum Village, which is Thich Nhat Hanhs headquarters in France. This is a worldwide retreat center and monastery and the film gives a feel for the day-to-day life of Thich Nhat Hanh.

What I really value here is the portrayal of the inner life of a world famous leader and peace activist. It conveys the power of love and non-violence that is embodies in this gentle and humble man.

The film is also appropriate for younger people. While there are vignettes of Vietnam, there were no violent scenes. I think this makes the film ideal for kids 10 and older. Thich Nhat Hanh is a great example of the power of vulnerability, sensitivity and gentle persistence coming from a grounded and loving place. I believe this is a very worthwhile message to convey to our youth and the film length at less than an hour is idea for classroom environments.

Peace Is Every Step and the Bonus, Touching Peace, are very different...but, both are good. You will learn who the man is in the feature, and you will get some powerful insight on war and peace. In the bonus, Thich Nhat Hanh is your teacher...just like you attended the talk in Berkley yourself. This dvd has so much healing potential. I wish everyone could see it.
